Page 90 of The Betrayal You Serve
There's a good chance he's on campus in a meeting with someone somewhere, but something tells me that I could search this place high and low and never find him.
My gut tells me that he's not in a meeting trying to secure his future, that it's worse than that. And if that's the case, then there's only one person I need to talk to right now.
Swiping my purse from the bench, I take off running until I'm in the parking lot. I slam the car door behind me, turn the engine, and slam it into drive.
I barely remember the journey to the Harris house. Every turn and stoplight passes me by. I have no idea if I drive through any and quite frankly, I don't care.
I leave my engine running and fly from the car the second I'm on the driveway, hammering my fist down on the front door like a maniac.
My chest heaves with my panic, my head spins and my hands tremble with my fear that something has happened to him.
I shouldn't have left this morning. I should have—
The door swings open and Devin's face immediately goes from smiling to murderous in a split second.
It makes me wonder if all the Harrises are complete psychopaths.
"What?" he barks, staring down at me as if I have no right to be standing on his doorstep.
"Have you heard from Kane? Have you seen him? Do you know where he is?" I ask in a rush, barely able to catch my breath.
"No. He'll be at practice."
"He's not. Hasn't he told you?"
He raises a brow for me to continue.
"He told Victor he's done and he's following through on taking college away. He's not at practice, he's lost his place on the team."
Devin's expression begins to change the more I say.
"When did you last talk to him?"
"I left him in Rosewood this morning to come to class."
"Fuck. Get out of the way."
He pushes past me, forcing me aside and immediately unlocks his car.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I bark at him as I right myself.
"Are you fucking coming or what?" I look from my car to Devin's and quickly run around to my driver's side and kill the engine.
"Yeah, I'm coming." I have no fucking clue where we're going but I'm all in right now.
He barely waits for me to climb into his passenger seat before he floors the accelerator and wheelspins down the street.
"Where are we going?"
"Reid's."
I nod. That's where I wanted to go but not knowing where he lives kinda halted that plan.
I sit with my leg bouncing up and down with my fingers drumming down on it while my stomach churns as I imagine all the things Victor could do to him for wanting out. He might not even be alive.
My breathing becomes so erratic that I think I'm going to have to ask Devin to stop the car so I can get some air.
Clearly realizing that I'm losing my grip on reality, he opens the window for me.
