Page 12 of The Betrayal You Serve
Grabbing the purse from the floor, I throw it over to him.
Immediately, he starts rooting through it without a care in the world until he pulls out a small, familiar square piece of paper.
He stares at it, scanning all the details before he passes it over to me.
My stomach twists painfully as I look at it. It's so similar to the one Letty has of our little boy, only as I stare at this one, I feel nothing.
The baby is obviously smaller and not as easy to make out but it's there and the details printed on the side show Alana's name and last week's date.
"Due date?" Reid barks and she immediately rattles off a date six months in the future.
He takes a seat in front of her again, his eyes never wavering from hers.
"And the night you conceived the baby?"
"I'm not telling you that," she snaps. “It's personal."
"So personal that it'll save you from death?"
Her lips part ready to speak.
"No, I didn't think so."
She rips her eyes from his and looks at me once again. "It was the night you took me to the Greek place in Maddison. We stayed in the Royal after in that incredible suite. You remember?"
I nod once, unfortunately remembering it all too well.
"That night."
"You're on birth control," I state. "And I never once came anywhere near you without protection."
She scoffs. "Don't be naïve, Kane. You know as well as I do that nothing is one hundred percent effective." She rolls her eyes as if the answer is so obvious but despite her pleading words, I'm still unconvinced by her.
I have no idea what it is. The detachment in her words, the complete opposite of how Letty talks about her pregnancy even a year after losing it. Something just isn't right.
The ring of Reid's cell phone cuts through the silence as Alana and I stare at each other, her waiting for me to call Reid off and me waiting for the truth.
"Yes," he barks into the phone which isn't on speaker this time. "Okay, great. Thank you so much. You've told me everything I need."
He hangs up, the tension only becoming thicker now he knows the truth.
My heart pounds and my head starts to spin.
"Reid?" My voice sounds desperate and I hate that she can hear the vulnerability but I need to know she's lying. I need to be able to go to Letty and tell her that it's bullshit, that she's the only one to have ever carried my baby.
"Go back upstairs, Kane."
"No, I want to be here," I argue.
"Go upstairs. Now."
"But—"
He turns and stares me dead in the eye.
"Fine. Fine." I throw my hands up in defeat.
Turning my back on them, I march past cells, wondering if anyone else is inside them, and if they are, how much they can hear before I climb the stairs and go back to his kitchen for another beer. But before the door to the basement slams closed behind me, I hear her shrill scream.
