He was better than the memory Drew had stored in his head.

With the past in mind, Drew couldn’t help but think back to the events from earlier in the day. He hadn’t been lying when he told Shay that no one was to blame when it came to their separation, but what he’d meant was neither of them was to blame, but he didn’t exclude his ex. He blamed Anneliese for everything. Drew knew the adult thing, the professional thing to do, would have been to simply let it all go. He had Shay, he had his son, but in this he wasn’t willing to be either adult or professional.

Anneliese had no excuse, especially because Drew knew that her actions had been purposely done. Maybe not the first time. The part where she’d called him during his first night with Shay, but he would bet she’d figured out what was happening when Shay answered, and she’d chosen to scare him off. The fact that she never mentioned the phone call, or meeting Shay, even though she’d known how Drew felt, well, that he couldn’t forgive.

The phone call he’d had while Shay was still asleep had gone a long way in making Drew feel better about being robbed of the years with his son and his omega.

“Drew, this is a lovely surprise. I don’t have anything scheduled for Walker Inc,” Anneliese said.

“That’s what I’m calling to talk about,” Drew replied, in a pleasant tone.

“Oh did you need me?” Drew didn’t miss the double entendre in her tone.

That was how it had been between them since the breakup. Drew had always known that Anneliese wasn’t over him, that she’d hoped he would come to his senses and marry her. He had considered it briefly, especially after Shay’s disappearance, but in the end he couldn’t go through with it.

“I met my son,” Drew said, his tone conversational. “He’s three-years-old, four in a few months.”

“Oh?” Anneliese’s voice lost the flirtatious quality.

“Funny thing is, my son’s father, my omega, told me this story, and I believe him,” Drew said.

“I think I have another call coming in. Could I—” Anneliese tried.

“I think you’ll want to hear it. I certainly found it interesting,” Drew interrupted.

Anneliese didn’t reply.

“You see, he told me about coming to find me, while pregnant, and meeting someone with the name Anneliese. In my mind I thought, it couldn’t be her, she knew how much I’d looked for him. She would have told me.”

“Drew, you don’t understand—” Anneliese tried speaking.

“I’m not finished,” Drew said. His tone cold, anger coursing through his veins. “I missed out on years of my son’s life, and the man I love thought I only used him as a plaything. He thought I was a liar and a cheat.”

“I… I… knew if he came back we wouldn’t have a shot,” Anneliese tried defending herself.

“We never did,” Drew snapped. “The second time was a mistake and I blame myself, because if it hadn’t happened, then Shay would have never met you.”

“Drew,please, you have to understand.”

“I have to understand nothing. You will be getting a letter terminating our business relationship. Your services for my company are no longer required.”

Anneliese gasped, “You’re my biggest client. Please, Drew, I was just trying—”

Drew had hung up before she could continue. He hadn’t wanted to hear a word from her. And as petty as it was, it had helped.

Drew looked at Shay and realized they needed to go home now. He made it through the whole dinner, but he needed Shay like he needed his next breath.

Shay must have seen the look in his eye, because his omega took his hand that was resting on the table, “Let’s go home.”

Drew nodded, then stood, and so did Shay. Drew reached into his pocket and pulled out his money clip. He dropped a couple of bills on the table, enough to cover the tip and meal. He probably overpaid, but he didn’t care.

The ride home was silent, the sexual tension in the air thick enough it probably needed a bloody saw to cut through it at this point.

They got home and both of them got out the car, Shay not waiting for Drew to get the door for him, like he’d done on their way to the restaurant.

Thankfully, their son was having a sleepover at Drew’s parents’ hotel, and his housekeeper had the night off.

Shay went ahead of Drew as he took a second to lock the door and set the alarm.
