Neither of them seemed to know what to say to move the conversation along, so Drew stuck the hand with the vase out to Shay, “For you.”
Drew held his breath waiting for Shay to react, hoping the reaction wasn’t tossing the bouquet out. He wasn’t sure what had made him get flowers for Shay, but he had and it was the perfect reflection of Drew’s rioting emotions.
Even though he was mad as hell at Shay for not only disappearing on him, but also keeping his child a secret, something in Drew still… was weak when it came to this man.
Shay gave Drew a shy smile, “You didn’t have to.”
“I know, but I wanted to,” Drew shrugged. Feigning a nonchalance he definitely didn’t feel.
“They’re beautiful,” Shay whispered. He looked down at the large bag from the toy store that Drew had put down on the floor.
Shay raised a brow, “Went shopping I see.”
Drew flushed, “I wasn’t sure what he liked, so I got a bit of everything.
“I noticed,” Shay tried not to smile, but seemed to be failing.
Drew's heart fluttered. Wait, was an alpha’s heart allowed to flutter? Drew didn't care because his was. He liked making Shay smile.
Drew looked past Shay into the house, trying to catch a glimpse of his son. Shay must have caught him looking because the omega stepped back and invited him in.
“Please come in,” Shay lowered his voice as they walked into his home, “Andy is on a time-out. He was getting over-excited when I told him you were coming over.” Shay paused and turned to meet Drew’s eyes, “He doesn’t know who you are, but I think he knows it’s important,” the omega paused, like he was thinking, then shrugged, “he doesn’t... he hasn’t really spent time with an alpha, so I think that’s it.”
Drew’s inner voice was cheering. Shay might not have meant to, but he’d inadvertently told Drew that there’d been no alpha present in his life. At least that was what he heard.
“Well except my dad, but he’s older, so it’s different you know,” Shay began walking again until they were back in the room from the night before.
Drew’s cock twitched, and awareness traveled through the length of him in response to the memory of being buried inside Shay. It came as no surprise to him that his body reacted to being in this room again. Then again, he couldn’t not react to Shay apparently. It had been the same the first time and it had never happened again with anyone since.
All those thoughts fled the moment he set eyes on his son, looking like he was five seconds away from jumping off the sofa if the way his little feet were tapping was any indication.
Drew’s heart sped up, his palms became sweaty, his mouth dry, as he looked at the most perfect little human alive. Drew could honestly say his friends’ kids were okay. He never spent enough time to do more than ooh and ahh appropriately when the guys started talking about their children, but he could finally see how they could spend an inordinate amount of time waxing on about them.
Drew hadn’t exchanged one word with Andy yet, but already he thought he was the most amazing thing to ever walk this earth.
Drew dropped the bag filled with toys on the floor, and carefully approached Andy, who suddenly stopped bouncing as Drew got closer. He crouched down in front of his son, and swallowed, mentally saying a prayer that he didn’t screw this up.
Drew looked behind him for a moment and caught Shay’s eye. The omega swallowed before giving Drew an encouraging nod. With that Drew turned around, and introduced himself to his son.
“Hello there, Andy.” Drew’s heart melted in his chest… "I'm Drew. Andrew Walker-Thompson.” Drew swallowed around the huge lump that had formed in his throat, “I am an old friend of your papa. And you have no idea… no idea,” His voice cracked a little and he had to clear his throat before finishing, "I’m just so very pleased to meet you at long last.”
“Nice to meets you too,” Andy responded sweetly, extending his hand like a grown up, making Drew’s heart contract.
He was about to shake his son’s hand.
Gods, he’d missed so much.
Even teaching Andy how to shake someone’s hand.
The anger he felt towards Shay rose to the surface again, but Drew pushed it down forcefully.
Andy tilted his head to the side, his brow furrowing, and right then and there Drew saw a mix of his father, his brother Austin, and himself.
“You haves the name,” Andy said, “My name is Andrew too, in’t it, papa?”
Andy looked in the direction of where Shay was for confirmation.
For a moment Drew had forgotten the other man’s presence. He never thought the day would come when he would be in the same room as Shay and have his attention completely focused on another human.
