“Is he mine?” Drew asked again, this time his voice was cold angry, the pleading gone, replaced with the frigid anger that could only stem from being betrayed by someone he may have had on a pedestal.

Drew took a step forward, without realizing it, but a hand on his shoulder stopped him. It was then Drew realized they were the focus of most of the adults at the party.

Even the kids, sensing the tension, had gone over to their parents. Drew looked behind him, and saw the hand on his shoulder belonged to his friend Nickolas, whose omega must have called him over.

When he glanced over at Nickolas’ omega, it was to find him with his twins, and Shay’s son… his son… in his arms. It looked like he was restraining Shay’s son, who seemed to want to come over to his papa.

Drew took a step back and glanced around the garden. The adults were looking on curious, but also prepared to move their kids if things got loud, it seemed.

Drew knew he would never lay hands on an omega, but he also knew that he was just barely holding on to his temper, he tried to control it, because he didn’t want to say anything he would later regret.

Also, he hated the scared look in his son’s eyes. That wasn’t how he wanted his son to see him. And itwashis son. It was like someone had taken a photo of him at that age and printed a person. He looked in Nickolas’ eyes, and he saw sympathy there.

His friend’s gaze had been on Drew’s son, and apparently, he saw it too.

He had a son. Drew had a child.

“This isn’t over,” Drew said to an apparently mute Shay, “Not by a long shot,” He added as he stepped back.

Once he did, Jai released his son, and the boy ran into Shay’s arms. Immediately, Shay wrapped his arms around their little boy, even though his eyes never left Drew.

Drew watched Shay back away, slowly, until the man took their son’s hand in his and hightailed it out of there, “Don’t think you can run again. No matter where you go this time, I will find you.”

Drew knew Shay heard him, because his spine straightened and his steps got quicker. His son looked behind and waved. Drew wasn’t sure who he was waving at, maybe it was the twins, maybe it was him, but all he knew was that meeting those eyes that looked exactly like his, possession and love like he had never experienced enveloped him.

He turned towards Jai, “I need his full name and address, now.”

Jai looked at his husband, whose hand was still holding on to Drew like he thought Drew would go after Shay.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Jai said, his tone damn near arctic. The glare in his eyes would have had Drew six-feet under if looks could kill. For the first time, his best friend’s husband looked on him with barely concealed hostility. Actually, that was straight up hostility.

“Honey,” Nickolas began.

“Don’t honey me,” Jai shot at his husband, in a tone that Drew had never heard the omega use on his friend. “He lied to him, and got him pregnant he doesn’t get to just… just…”

Jai gestured with hands, clearly angry and searching for a word, but coming up empty.

Drew frowned. What on earth was Jai talking about? What lies had Shay spread? Fuck, what had Shay told their son about him?

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Drew said, in a controlled voice, his anger at the surface, trying to get free and be released on anyone at this point. But Drew controlled himself. So he didn’t snarl at his best friend’s husband. Somehow he knew Nic wouldn’t take kindly to him talking to Jai that way. Anyway, that wasn’t pleasant and his friend would stop being so kind.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Drew repeated, in what he hoped was a softer tone. Drew shook his head, still caught up in his shock, “I didn’t know, I had no idea.”

Jai looked him up and down, like Drew was something nasty on his shoe, “Yeah, right.”

The small man walked away, wrangling his kids, leaving Drew with Nickolas. But not before shooting Drew a look that could only be described as venomous.

“He’s the one from…” Nic said, not needing to finish the sentence.

“He is,” Drew rasped.

“You really loved him, didn't you.” It wasn’t a question, even though his friends never brought Shay up, especially after he’d nearly bitten their heads off every time they’d tried in the early days. They’d all seen what it had done to him. Nickolas more than most, since Drew had almost camped out at his home, believing stupidly that Shay would return.

“I did,” Drew rubbed his hands over his face, and sighed, “It was less than twenty-four hours, but I just knew.”

“When you know, you know,” Nickolas smiled, his eyes softening, probably thinking of how he’d gone against his family and married Jai.

“That soon,” Drew almost sounded pleading, he wanted his friend to tell him he was crazy—that you couldn’t be that sure about someone after barely knowing them a day.
