“You know how rare that is in our world son. Someone that loves you for you.” His dad pointed this out and pulled his mom closer into his body.

“You clearly love him, son, so what are you waiting for?” His mom asked.

“It’s complicated, Mom, but I promise, I’m trying to fix it.”

“Try harder,” his dad said, before helping his mom into their car, then getting in himself.

They were right. He needed to do better.

That nightthey had dinner together again, all of them, and Drew was planning to get Shay alone, but before he could, his phone rang. Not his mobile, the one in the house. He knew it was important, because he’d given it to his assistant and threatened him with bodily harm if he was disturbed for anything short of a crisis.

Drew went to answer the call and left the office door slightly ajar. That was how he heard Shay trying to get Andy to bed.

Drew heard the TV go off, or should he have said he knew the TV was turned off since he stopped hearing the movie Andy had been watching.

“Papa!” Andy cried.

“Bedtime,” Shay said.

“But Papa, Paw Patrol,” Andy tried in a wheedling voice that had Drew smiling.

“Enough for the day, it’s past your bedtime and you’ve watched too much TV already.”

“No, Papa!” Andy whined, before shouting, “Daaaddddy.”

Drew heard his son call out for him and footsteps on the wooden floors. Likely, Andy running away from his papa, trying to look for him.

“No point calling your dad, he’s on a call. Besides, two daddies doesn’t mean you get to try and play us against each other.”

His son kept calling out for him, clearly not listening to his papa. Drew had to admire the kid, figuring out two parents meant he could try getting his way from the other.

At this point, he was barely concentrating on his call. Which wasn’t like him at all. He knew it had to be important, but he was more focused on his family.

Finally, he heard Shay speak again, “Don’t you want to see what daddy has planned for tomorrow? If you don’t go to bed you’ll be too tired to play and you’ll spoil the surprise.”

Drew held his breath, waiting to see how his son replied to that. “Want daddy to say night-night.”

“I’m sure he’ll come and give you a kiss when he’s done with his call.”

With that, Drew finally heard his son and Shay go up the stairs. He shouldn’t have been, but he was proud of his little negotiator.

Drew had never thought about leaving the company to his heir, but he realized if that was what Andy wanted, it was there for him.

“Sir, Sir, did you hear me? What should we do?” Drew heard his assistant’s voice on the phone and focused back on his call.

His phone calllasted longer than he thought, but as Shay had promised, Drew took a second to kiss their son. Andy stirred, but didn’t wake up, yet it was enough for Drew to know he’d done it.

He loved the fact that Shay and Andy were under his roof, but the fact that Shay wasn’t in his arms… in his bed? Well, that was just...baby steps, Drew. They're in your house, you’ve spent the week with them, Shay is getting more comfortable around you, that’s a win.

Now if he could just get through the rest of his omega’s defenses.

As he tossed and turned in his large empty bed, something Shay said niggled in his mind. Drew tried piecing it together, but couldn’t figure out what it was. It was right there flickering through his mind, but like when you tried swatting a fly, he couldn't quite grab a hold of it.

It didn’t escape his notice that Shay had avoided talking about the reason he left all those years ago. Again. But why on earth he thought it would be easier that way for Drew was beyond him.
