“My parents took Andy for the day. I sent them a text when I woke up to go to the bathroom, and they turned up at eight o’clock. I wanted to wake you, but you looked so beautiful sleeping, and we had already agreed earlier.”
“You’re his dad,” Shay said. “They’re his grandparents. He deserves to know them and you don’t have to ask. Obviously, we’ll need to talk about it, but…”
“I know, love. We’ll figure it out,” Drew reassured him.
Shay cleared his throat and gave himself a pep talk, before blurting out words he’d been meaning to say since he ran into Drew again.
“I’m sorry,” Shay whispered. He didn’t look up and meet Drew’s eyes, he was too much of a coward for that, but he heard Drew’s footsteps and knew the alpha had moved closer.
“What for, baby?” Drew asked.
Shay’s chest tightened, but he managed to get the words out. “I’m sorry for… that you missed so much… that I didn’t try more to tell you…”
The alpha sat down on the bed and moved so he was beside Shay. His voice came out gruff. “I’m sorry too, love. I should have done better, searched harder…” Drew sighed.
“You have nothing to be sorry about, now that I know… well, it wasn’t your fault. I acted like a child that morning. I should have woken you up and asked you. I just didn’t know any better… and Iknewwhere to find you… you didn’t know where to findme.”
Drew sighed deeply, “I could have. My pride got in the way after the first two weeks of my people looking. I figured if you didn’t want me, then why should I bother. I could have tried harder. I certainly have the resources.”
“Can we really put everything behind us,” Shay whispered. “Or are we fooling ourselves?”
“I can’t speak for you, love, but I know I can. I don’t want to lose you again, and I see how you would have come to the conclusions you did. It’s no one’s fault.”
Shay breathed a sigh of relief. He knew that no matter what happened they would probably fight, but he also knew that he was done running.
“Want to share my breakfast with me?” Shay asked, holding out a piece of bacon to Drew.

It wasn’t evenfive o’clock, and somehow Shay had gotten a hundred and forty-four long-stemmed red and white roses. He had a new laptop he didn’t need, a new watch, new luggage.
He wasn’t even sure how Drew had managed to order all of it, but the gifts kept coming. Shay had wanted to complain, but he’d seen the look in Drew’s eyes that said the alpha was getting some sort of pleasure from it, so he kept saying thank you.
Even though he had no idea what on earth to do will all of it.
It was weird, but with the new relationship growing between them, also came this profound sadness, like he had to mourn what they had lost. Shay realized he was mourning the lost years, the years he could have had with Drew, the years Andy could have known his father, and the years that Drew could have known his son.
Shay knew that he was at fault. In hindsight, he should have stuck around, even if it was to rage at Drew. Hell, if he’d poured a glass of cold water in the alpha's face after the phone call Drew would have explained it all. But, it begged the question whether Shay would have believed him. They had met and hooked up so quickly, caught up in this wave of intense attraction and instant connection, it was possible Shay would have seen Drew as a liar. He didn’t know.
What he did know was, this second chance they seemed to be getting, he wasn’t going to waste a moment of it. Maybe he would get the happy ending like the ones he wrote for his characters. And like his new friends had with their alphas.

Drew
Drew looked across from the table at the restaurant he’d picked for their date. It was in the nicest restaurant he could find, and he’d paid a tidy sum to get him and Shay the whole patio and outdoor space to themselves.
But it was worth it. Shay was worth it.
Drew could have had dinner at home again, but there was something so official about getting all dressed up to go out with his omega.
Especially seeing Shay all dressed up in the outfit he’d gotten for him. It just made Drew pleased as punch. He knew Shay didn’t need any of the things he’d bought him, but prior to today he’d been able to buy things for their son, but not for Shay, and now he could.
When they’d walked into the restaurant, Drew hadn’t missed the eyes on Shay. His omega was stunning with his gorgeous creamy skin glowing against the dark colors of his outfit.
Drew had shot deadly looks at some alphas whose eyes had trailed over Shay’s body, proudly staking his claim as he followed behind his omega to their table. Even though he’d wanted to growl at them for looking at Shay, Drew felt proud being the one Shay was with.
Dinner was perfect. Drew learned more about Shay, not that he didn’t already know that the man was intelligent and kind. He was passionate about his work, and everything he cared about it seemed.
