It was all so very domestic and normal… like something they’d always done.

Drew included him in everything, the zoo, an amusement park for kids, the aquarium, and this play center with tunnels that Drew had climbed through with Andy, because their son asked him to. He didn’t shy away from any of it.

Through all of it, Drew hadn’t stopped grinning, or looking at their son like he was magic. Every time Shay caught Drew staring, there was this look of awe in his eyes like he couldn’t believe Andy really existed.

It was the way Shay felt all the time, and again, he wasn’t sure what he’d expected from Drew if he was being honest. But it wasn’t any of this. The alpha said he wanted to get to know his son, and Shay kind of figured something along the lines of every other weekend or something.

Okay, so he kind of expected Drew to half-ass it, but that definitely wasn’t the case. Shay was prepared for Drew to cancel on Andy, or excuse himself to take several business calls, but whenever they were together there hadn’t even been a phone in sight.

It made him rethink so much, because everything he thought about the alpha was clearly so wrong. It showed Shay that he honestly didn’t know anything about Drew. And that scared Shay more than it should, because it meant his resolve was weakening—if it was ever there to start.

Shay was lounging on a pool chair, his stomach feeling off, probably from all the rich food. He was watching Drew and Andy splash around in the large pool, Drew never far enough away from their son that he couldn’t scoop him up if he needed to.

That was the kind of parent Drew was turning out to be, so it made Shay wonder if maybe he was wrong about the man Drew was too.

He was so confused.

But then Shay would remember coming all the way on the bus to tell Drew about Andy. He would flash to Anneliese, meeting her… her smile at the mention of Drew’s name.

Then, everything would get mixed up and muddled in his head.

Shay had tried telling himself the past was the past, but he knew that wasn’t true, especially because his heart wasn’t listening to thejust be a co-parent, but his heart was also terrified of being placed in Drew’s hands again. If he’d done so much damage after a day, what would he do now… now that Shay saw how it could be?

When Drew invited Shay along on this trip, a part of Shay had braced himself to end up at the house that he’d turned up at all those years ago, but thankfully, that wasn’t the case.

He looked around the backyard of the beach house, and all he could think was at least this time he’d made it past the driveway.

The plan today was for Shay and Andy to meet Drew’s parents. They’d called and informed Drew they were done waiting and would be coming over today. Even though Shay had tried getting out of it, he strictly believed that Drew’s parents wouldn’t want to meet him, but Drew insisted. So, here he was watching his son, and his son’s father splashing together in the pool, waiting on Drew’s parents.

Shay couldn’t even enjoy watching Drew in all his bare-torsoed glory, because he was panicking about meeting his son’s other grandparents. All Shay could think was they would judge him. They would judge him for keeping their grandchild away, judge him for getting pregnant young, or maybe they would think he was trying to trap Drew.

Shay tried to hide his anxiety, but he must have been doing a poor job, because Drew plopped down on a seat beside him, and Shay hadn’t even noticed him get out of the pool.

“You don’t have to worry, you know. My parents aren’t monsters, they’re just excited to meet their grandson,” Drew said, as he used the towel to dry himself off. And Shay couldn’t stop his eyes from following every movement.

When Shay looked up it was to find the alpha’s dancing eyes on him.

Drew had caught him staring, but who could blame him? The alpha was…wow. Drew was tall, his torso perfectly chiseled. He was perfection.

Shay’s cheeks flamed in embarrassment for being caught ogling Drew, but the alpha showed no such restraint. Drew noticed Shay noticing him, and his gaze reciprocated, tracing the line of Shay’s body, almost like a caress.

Shay’s cheeks heated further, and he looked away, refusing to meet Drew’s eye, “A grandson I kept from them.”

“Huh?” Drew replied, clearly distracted from the conversation they’d been having. And when Shay met Drew’s gaze, the alpha's eyes had darkened, lust in them.

Shay cleared his throat. Not only wasn’t it the time, but it definitely wasn’t the place. He looked over to where Andy played, in a mini playground set that had been installed the day after they arrived.

His son went up and down the slide over and over, clearly having the time of his life.

“They just want to meet their grandson,” Drew’s voice interrupted, and when Shay looked the alpha’s way, his eyes were on their son too.

Shay smiled a little sadly. He realized now that he should have tried harder to get father and son to meet, regardless of… well… whatever he felt.

With that thought, another one followed, one Shay had been turning over in his head since Drew said it.

“You looked for me?” Shay whispered. Drew’s eyes left Andy’s and fell on him immediately, but he couldn’t meet the alpha’s gaze, he just needed to know why. “You said you looked for me,” Shay repeated his eyes back on their son. “I didn’t want to hear it before…” Shay trailed off.

“I did,” Drew said, his voice filled with something Shay couldn’t decipher, that had him turning around to meet the alpha’s gaze. When their eyes met again the lust was gone, replaced with something else, but before Shay could figure it out, it was Drew who looked away this time.
