“Shay, baby, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Anneliese and I had been broken up for over a month when we met. Yeah, she was trying to reconcile, but I wasn’t interested. I knew we didn’t have a future, baby.”
Drew reached out for Shay’s arm. The omega’s hands lay face up on his thigh. At least this time Shay didn’t flinch away from his touch, although Shay’s whole posture screamed defeated and hurt, and Drew wasn’t even sure what to say. Of all the things Shay could have said, well… Drew was stunned. He hadn’t even considered Shay had left because… of something, he may have done… or rather, not done.
He should have shut Anneliese down. Told her they were done. Told her to stop calling. Maybe if he had, all this could have been avoided.
“So, why was she at your house a couple of months later moving in? Why was she there when I came to tell you about Andy? My parents convinced me that I might have overreacted and that I should go talk to my guy. I never told them your name. I have a feeling they would have shown up on your doorstep.” Shay laughed, but there was no humor in it. “The day I felt Andy kick for the first time, I missed you, and I wanted to share it with you. So, I paid someone with the last of my student student loans since I had dropped out, and they found your address. I got on the bus and I came to tell you about our baby, to tell you that you were going to be a daddy, but instead of meeting you… I met her. She had a… she was moving in.”
Tears streamed down Shay’s cheeks. He couldn’t help going back to that day and feeling devastated all over again. Before that, there was this huge maybe with Drew, but that day had made him realize that he needed to stop dreaming about a future with the alpha.
Drew was stunned silent. He felt like someone had kicked him in the balls, and then thrown him into the ocean.
“Shay, baby. Gods, I didn’t know, I had no idea,” Drew pleaded. His voice came out hoarse like he’d been screaming for hours.
“I stupidly thought I would show up at your house, then you would explain everything, and I would see why I had overreacted, and then I would apologize and then it would be us living happily ever after, with our baby. Stupid right?”
“Shay, I promise you nothing would have made me happier. The only reason you saw Anneliese at my home,” Drew swallowed, he wasn’t proud of this, but it was the truth, “After you left, I looked for you, but I wasn’t even sure where to start. I didn’t even have a last name. I tried though, but it was like you just vanished. There are four major colleges, and five smaller trade schools and colleges in our city alone. Not to mention community colleges. No one knew a Shay.”
“Oh yeah, my full name is Seamus. I hate it, but obviously you can’t register for classes with a nickname,” Shay replied. He was processing the alpha’s words, but Drew still hadn’t explained why she was at his home.
“If you guys were broken up as you say, why was she at your house?” Shay asked. “It was almost five months later. I’ll never forget. It was after my twenty-two-week ultrasound.”
Drew wiped his hand with his face, “I was distraught after you left. Yeah, I know as an alpha we shouldn’t be that emotional, but I was. The truth was I had never felt that way about anyone either. I was old enough to know you were special. Different. I was enamored. I spent the next few years searching for that feeling, but I never found it again. And I know why. Because, you’re the only person that’s ever made me feel like that...” Drew sighed deeply, “…but when I couldn’t find you, I was pissed at everyone. Even my staff could feel it. Anneliese, well she was there, and in a moment of weakness… we got back together and she moved in… It didn’t last long, and I was gone more than I was around. I left the country for a while back then. And if it was five months after us, well, we were done by then. You probably caught her moving out, or something.”
Drew squeezed Shay’s hand that was in his, “I swear to you on everything I hold dear, baby, I never even thought about her the moment I laid eyes on you.”
Shay sighed. Gods, what a mess they’d both made, even now. They could have laid it all out. He could have laid it all out from the start, but pride and hurt had gotten in the way.
“I should have told you when I saw you again…” Shay admitted, “…but I was just so mad at you. Meeting her made me feel like… like we didn’t matter… that I was nothing more than a one-nighter.”
Drew moved so his back was against the headboard. He lifted Shay into his arms, so the omega was sat on his knees, “You have never been a one-nighter to me, baby. From the moment I met you I had this knowing, this certainty that my life would never be the same. You were like fresh air for me, and I spent the past few years so mad at you. And mad at everyone else, because they weren’tyou.”
Shay burrowed into the alpha’s chest and Drew’s arms tightened around him.
“I was a surly bastard sometimes, and when I found out you had kept our son from me… there was a moment where I hated you… but I was still so attracted to you... and it made me even more pissed at you,” Drew admitted.
“I know the feeling,” Shay sighed. “Gods, what a mess we made. I can’t help but feel like we missed out on so much, because of some crazy fluke.”
Drew nodded, but he didn’t say anything, because it wasn’t just a fluke. Anneliese had known who Shay was. There was no way she wouldn’t have. He’d told her one night when he’d drunk too much and was feeling sorry for himself, which meant she could have told Drew that Shay turned up at his home, but she didn’t, and that was something he couldn’t forgive.
Drew couldn’t take his anger out on the gods, or fate, for somehow keeping them apart, but he had a target, and Anneliese? Well, she was about to feel the wrath of a Walker protecting his family.
“So what now?” Shay sighed.
“Well, you’re clearly in love with me,” Drew said, in a teasing tone, although he was also hoping with all his heart it was true. Maybe when they’d first met it was lust, or adrenaline, or whatever anyone wanted to call it, but now that he’d gotten to know Shay, spent time with him, seen how amazing a papa he was to their son, how strong he was.Fuck, helovedhim. Loved him more than he’d ever thought possible.
“I am?” Shay moved away from Drew’s chest, his eyes teasing… He hadn’t felt this light in years. Who knew letting out would make him feel all free?
“Well, you said it yourself,” Drew grinned.
“And you’re clearly in love with me,” Shay said, and he heard the same hopefulness in his voice that Drew hadn’t been able to hide, even though he’d tried.
“Well, good to now we both agree on something,” Drew said. When Shay looked the alpha in the eyes, they blazed with hope and lust… and something else that had him throwing himself at Drew, sealing their lips together.
Drew let Shay taste every inch of his mouth, the taste of his omega had Drew’s cock painfully hard in no time.
Shay must have felt his bulge, because his omega ground his ass against Drew’s cock.
“Shay…” Drew broke their kiss and moaned. He kissed down the side of Shay’s neck, his jaw. He nipped the omega’s ears, enjoying the shiver from Shay. Drew whispered, “Go on a date with me, my love.”
