Page 18 of Unforgettable Omega
Shay hated the pained look in Drew’s eyes as he asked Shay why. He didn’t think Drew was capable of making him feel even more like dirt, but this time it wasn’t because Shay felt used. No, it was because he felt like the bad guy—like a thief. That was how Drew had looked at him like Shay had stolen from him. Like Shay had stabbed him in the front, and stolen his most precious possession right out of his bleeding arms.
And in the split second it took for Drew to come to the conclusion that Andy was his––the right conclusion, but still––Shay hadn’t missed the possessive way Drew had eyed his son… their son.
It had all been too much.
And like a coward, Shay had bolted.
On his way out of Riley’s home, Shay had wanted to pick his son up and run, but Andy was almost too heavy now and quite tall for his age…like his father, that thought slipped in unbidden. So, Shay had dragged his son out of there, thanking his stars he kept his car keys in his pocket and not in the backpack he carried around for Andy.
They’d arrived home in less than twenty minutes, and after he settled Andy in front of the television in the living room and put on one of his favorite kids’ shows on Netflix, Shay went through to his bedroom to change out of his clothes. He was used to being dressed down while at home, so doing everything on automatic, Shay walked into his small walk-in closet and changed into his stay-at-home sweats, doing everything instinctively while his mind went a mile a minute.
Shay went through the motions trying to pretend like he wasn’t freaking out inside.
Dinner, he had to make dinner for Andy.
Shay knew he was avoiding trying to pretend none of it happened. Not that it was working, but he figured maybe doing his normal routine… distracting himself would help.
It didn’t.
Crappity, crap, crap,he hadn’t seen this coming.
He went into the kitchen, walking up to the fridge and opening it, maybe a chicken sandwich and soup for dinner.
Shay threw everything together quickly and called Andy in to eat. His son chatted about the party, going on a mile a minute. Apparently, he liked his new friends. The twins were cool. Everything washed over Shay, but he felt like a spectator watching his life play out.
This was the part in the movie that had the flashback scene, where the actors replayed the events that had just occurred. Thankfully Andy was worn out from the party, so his son fell asleep after one story, giving Shay time to freak out.
All through dinner, bath time, story time, Shay couldn’t stop seeing Drew’s devastated face.
Then, his angry face… that ended on the alpha’s betrayed face.
Shay realized that if he’d wanted to hurt Drew the way Drew had hurt him, he’d just achieved his goal. He’d never seen an alpha that emotional. All of Drew’s feelings were there, open for the world to see.
Shay could have sworn Drew was close to tears if the emotions that choked the alpha’s voice were any indication.
He stood in the doorway of his son’s space-themed bedroom, staring at his child. Shay realized at that moment he couldn’t think about Drew’s feelings. All he could focus on was the fact that Drew could take his son away from him.
As good as things had gotten for omegas, as free as they were, and as many rights as they had received, there were still certain things that alphas had more rights on. Namely, offspring.
If Drew could prove that Andy was his son, he could get custody.
And Shay knew that even though he could afford to fight it, Drew could outspend him ten to one. The fact of the matter was if they ended up in court, the law was on Drew’s side.
Not only was he the alpha, but he was wealthy. He was capable of providing for a child.
Shay shoved his fist into his mouth to stop the howl of pain that tried to escape.
The worst part was anyone with eyes could see that Drew was Andy’s father. Shay had seen glimpses of it over the years, but seeing the two of them almost side by side, it was so very apparent, clear as day for the world, and any judge, to see.
Shay wondered if he could run again, but he had a feeling no matter where he went, Drew would find him. Shay had a feeling Drew would turn over the earth in search of him… well, in search of Andy.
He didn't blame Drew for his anger. He even stopped blaming Drew for getting him pregnant. Sure, he’d been angry when he first found out he was pregnant, but time passed, things changed.
His baby was placed in his arms.
Andy had changed his life in ways Shay couldn’t even put into words.
He could never regret Andy’s conception because his son was everything good in his life.
