His friend gave him a small smile, “I think you know the answer to that question.”
Drew sighed, he did. No matter how many times he tried explaining whatever he and Shay had shared as less than it was, it had never worked.
“I’ll go see if my little spitfire is in a sharing mode,” Nickolas’ lips lifted at the sides as he motioned towards the way Jai had stormed off.
“I don’t know what Shay told him, but I’m not the bad guy.”
His friend put a comforting hand on Drew’s shoulder, “I know. I’ll talk to Jai,” Nic’s lips lifted, “wish me luck.”
Drew had to wonder just how long Jai and Shay had been friends for the omega to take such a protective stance. Drew was prepared to hire someone to track Shay for him if Jai stubbornly refused to give him any information about Shay, and Andy.
And unlike the first time, he wouldn’t call the search off.
Nickolas went off to speak to Jai and explain the situation. The situation that still, to this day, baffled Drew, mainly, because he wasn’t sure what had happened. Granted it had only been a handful of hours, but it hadn’t diminished Drew’s feelings. He knew this, because even time hadn’t managed to do it.
Drew couldn’t figure out what would make Shay leave him, and keep his child away from him too.
He tried, but he couldn’t figure it out.
Drew would never forget walking into that kitchen and seeing Shay bent over trying to figure Nic’s coffee machine out. He could remember how desire had hit him swiftly and unexpectedly. Then, Shay had turned around and looked him in the eye, and immediately Drew knew it wasn’t just desire alone, right then and there Drew had fallen, hard and fast.
It was like he had no other choice but to fall madly in love with Shay.
It was fate.His fate.
He hadn't been looking, but when he’d set his eyes on Shay, he’d known this was the man he was supposed to have and to hold. His man. His omega.
As much Drew never said it aloud, in his heart Shay had remained his omega… but now…
Drew hadn’t known that as good as love could be, it could also be just as devastating when it held you in its grasp and never let go, giving you a taste, then cruelly ripping it away, so all you knew was what you were missing.
He shook his head, warding his thoughts off.
None of that was helpful to him right now, because clearly, he’d made an error in judgment. Good sex and instant attraction had clouded his judgment. Evidently, he’d made a one-night stand more than it was. At least that was what he kept trying to tell himself.
Obviously, that was all Shay had seen him as, or he would have… he would have called, or something. He’d known where Nic lived. He could have gone back to look for Drew. They would have pointed him in the right direction.
How could a man keep someone’s image burning bright when the person had deserted him without a word? He had taken Shay’s leaving hard. It had near crushed the life out of him, especially since he’d had no prior experience with desertion.
He had hated Shay at first. Hate was supposed to be a way out, but hate hadn't worked. All he’d felt was an immense sense of loss, like he had been holding on to something precious for a moment, and had lost it before he could fully appreciate it.
Apparently, twenty-four hours or less really could change your life. It had certainly changed Drew’s, and evidently, it was about to happen again, because of Shay. Always, because of Shay.
How could he have been so blindly mistaken about someone? How had he gotten it so wrong?

Drew sat in his car, looking over at the single story that he now knew belonged to Shay. He’d been parked there for almost an hour, although he’d spent the first half trying to curb the anger he felt.
Shay… It had been almost five years, so why did it feel like it was just yesterday?

Shay
He’d run away like a coward. Shay was pretty sure he’d left Andy’s backpack at Riley’s home. All he knew was he’d had to get out of there.
He couldn’t stand the tension in the air, the curious eyes on him, but worst of all, he couldn’t take the way Drew had looked at him with full-on hostility.
