The alpha cleared his throat, and replied, “Of course I looked for you. We’d planned to spend the weekend together… maybe more, and then you were just gone.”

“I thought it would be better if I left. I didn’t want to cause any trouble,” Shay replied, thinking back to how he’d felt, finding out the man he thought was going to be someone special in his life, alreadyhadsomeone special.

“Cause any trouble?” Drew sounded baffled, “How could you leaving be better? I thought we… I just thought we were on the same page that night.”

Shay frowned. Drew sounded genuinely baffled, and…hurt?

How was that possible? Why would he be hurt? Shay had done his best to put the past aside for the sake of their son. He was trying to get rid of the hurt, and anger he felt towards Drew. Mostly he was doing a good job, but the more time he spent with Drew, the more he wanted to rant at the alpha. Because, these past weeks, not just the vacation, everything, it felt like a glimpse into the life they could have had. And Shay wanted to scream at Drew for ruining it for them.

Shay wanted to move on from the past, but he knew that would never happen if they didn’t clear the air.

How does one clear the air?

Where did Shay begin?

His head told him, that even though Drew could be trusted with their son, it didn’t change the fact that the alpha was a liar and a cheater, but the more time he spent with Drew the more that didn’t feel right.

However, Shay hadn’t hallucinated the phone call, or Anneliese when he came over to see Drew.

But then, Drew’s words about looking for him echoed in Shay’s head. And he couldn’t figure out why the alpha would do that if all he’d wanted was a one-night stand, before returning to his fiancée.

Shay had kept himself awake thinking about it over and over. And whenever he thought he could ask Drew, he would chicken out, not wanting to rock the boat. He felt like he was on a rollercoaster. One day he decided to talk to Drew, the next, he didn’t want to in case whatever was said ruined whatever this was they were building.

Did he mention he was so fuckin’ confused?

So now here they were.

As much as Shay wanted to believe that... he wasn’t even sure what he wanted to believe, because he'd tried coming up with rationalizations to explain away Anneleise, but there were none, especially from the visit to Drew's home. Shay could have ignored the phone call, explained it away, and he had even though it was a little later. He had told himself he’d overreacted, told himself there must be some kind of mistake, but then he’d showed up at Drew’s house, months later, and there she was. He hadn’t imaginedher.

When Anneliese stopped being just a voice on a phone, but a real person, Shay couldn’t make any more excuses for Drew.

Forgetting the past was the only way to move forward... so that was what he planned on doing now. It was for the best…

“It doesn’t matter now, the past is in the past,” Shay said.

Drew’s brow creased, and he looked like he was about to argue, so Shay went for distraction.

“I definitely prefer this house to your other one. Never was a fan of glass and metal and all that modern architecture stuff.”

Drew ran his hand through his hair, frustration evident in his jerky movements. He looked at Shay, his brow furrowed, “Huh, glass and metal?”

Something was niggling at his brain, but before he could put his finger on it, his parents came through the double doors.

“Andrew Thompson, where is my grandson, I should give you a butt whooping for keeping him away for so long?” His mom's voice carried. She spotted Andy. Their son had just climbed to the top to come down his slide, and had frozen where he was, looking at the newcomers.

Drew could see Andy getting overwhelmed, before Shay could, he jumped out of his seat beside the omega and went over to Andy.

He got Andy to slide down, but his son lifted his arms up in the universal sign for wanting to get picked up. Even though Andy was a little big for Shay to pick him up, he wasn’t for Drew. Drew lifted his son into his arms and moved towards his parents.

As he walked, he told Andy, “These are daddy’s mommy and daddy.”

Drew knew his son knew what that meant, since some kids in his school did have two moms, or mom and dads.

“Like Grandpapa and Pop-pop,” Andy said.
