But he wanted her like a thirst that lived in the back of his throat. Chewing the soft tissue in his skull, demanding satisfaction.

It’s horrible, addictive, and he’s lapped that feeling up like gravy slop for years. Thinking of the time when all his lies came home to roost.

Letting his yearning lie dormant, fermenting in its own putrid need of a girl too young.

What’s he talking about? He had no fucking principles.

Seriously. None.

Lawless never cared one iota about how much older than her he was.

He would never pretend that’s what held him back.

It wasn’t.

Being a selfish prick who would in no way be the man who let someone deserve the good things, even if it meant letting them go.

Honestly, that was not him.

His electrical system was wrong because he saw nothing different from taking what he wanted, even against better judgment.

Instead, he gave her a chance at a life that wasn’t colored and controlled by his demanding hand. To mature and know her mind, wants, and desires, and experience other people beforehim.

He did that.

It was his one good deed.

And she didn’t take it.

She pined, and she fucking waitedfor him.

“Is that the truth?” her voice held firm, and he respected her for it. Another person hearing what he’d laid out might have thrown a fit. He wouldn’t have minded, he realized; it would have given him a reason to put rough hands all over her to calm her down.

Christ, would his dark thoughts ever calm the fuck down?

“Yeah.”

She swore softly in Spanish, but it didn’t come across as angry. “You have no hesitation eating me out while I was asleep, but you shy away from telling me you liked me when I was seventeen? You’re a damn conundrum, grumpy.”

He was grumpy again. Lawless smiled on the inside, tugging a little on her hair.

Was that all it took to make a man like him happy? Giving him his ridiculous nickname back.

He might be more deranged than he realized.

Hardly any words were shared after that. Instead, Angela lit out of the cabin, telling him she couldn’t let Zara down on her first day at the bar.

She was running. Processing what he’d told her.

It was fine.

Lawless was fit. He could outrun the little badass.
