Smirking, Lawless headed to the kitchen to find the library of takeout menus. He could cook and enjoyed doing it, but his belly demanded quick and easy right now. The moment his nose entered the kitchen, he smelled the food. On the counter, there was a black container with a clear lid.
She’d ordered food for him already.
Sneaky little badass hated him but fed him too.
Underneath the lid was Mongolian beef with scallions and white rice.
A favorite dish.
Smiling, he spooned it onto a plate. “Thanks for the food, angel.” He called out and was answered with silence. Her quiet act didn’t annoy him. He’d heaped a lot on her by coming back unexpectedly, moving in, and spying on her.
Wait. Angela didn’t know about that part yet.
Either way, she was dealing with a lot.
She shouldered too much.
Now he was back to take some of the burden.
Or to add to it.
He flopped down with his food, noticing her stiffness, but she didn’t jump up to move.
Lawless ate.
Angela worked.
He glanced at the screen and saw it was split. Half was a paper she was writing. The other was tattoo designs.
“You gonna ask Ruby to give you some ink?”
His dick jerked in his pants.
“Maybe,” she replied a few seconds later. To cut the conversation, she minimized the screen and returned to typing. Now and then, she’d curse under her breath, furiously backspace to start again.
More cursing. More backspacing. And then she caught her stride because, for the next hour, Lawless didn’t think her fingers stopped typing once.
Lawless took it all in while watching the news and then switched to the financial channel. A man liked to know how his money was multiplying, in Lawless’ case anyway.
She sipped from a tall Starbucks tumbler, dipped a hand into a bag of toffee. Trying a few times to entice Oscar away from Lawless, Angela huffed when the cat went on sleeping on his shoulder. “He’s only stuck to me because I’m new.” He spoke, and she jolted from the sound of his voice.
Her eyes never left the computer screen. He saw she was replying to an iMessage.
“I don’t care. I’m only the one who feeds and keeps him warm, who buys him beds to be comfortable in, toys to play with, and takes him to the vet to make sure he’s healthy.”
Lawless chuckled, hearing her salty pettiness toward the cat. The snoozing little shit was in trouble, and he didn’t even know it.
He’d never much cared about someone’s little human feelings before, but when she shot him a glare, he saw the hurt in her dark eyes, and Lawless’ gut spasmed to fix it.
“Oscar is your cat, Angela.”
Another zipped stare. So fucking gorgeous.
Her skin was flawless, and in his mind, he saw lots of lovely pink marks all over that pristine skin.
Before he could delve into dark territory, he brushed those deviant thoughts aside for now.
“Yes, he is. Don’t think about taking him from me too.”
