“Not planning on it. Catch you around.”
Probably not, and for once, Jay felt relief and freedom as he walked away.
FORTY
“And she lived deliriously ever after with a scowling villain.” - Angela
Angela watched the quiet exchange through the windscreen
She was cool with her man having the last farewell with his old flame. It was Angela who talked him into it when Jay left a message.
It didn’t mean she wouldn’t watch all the same.
She felt sorry for Jay. Even scary, powerful men could be lonely, and watching him striding toward his plane, he looked like the most desolate man in the world.
She hoped one day he’d find a piece of good in his life that had nothing to do with evil shit or pining for someone unrequited. If she could make Lawless, the coldest robot on earth, happy, then Jay certainly could find someone who loved him equally, if not more.
It would be seven months before an invitation came for Angela and Lawless to Jay’s New York wedding.
A smile was waiting for Lawless when he slid back into his brand new car and glanced at her as he started the engine.
“You looked so cute hugging him,” she cooed, teasing him, knowing he’d turn a warning stare her way. When he did, she felt butterflies in her stomach.
“The next time you get lippy with me, you’ll do it with my cock stretching out your mouth.”
A jolt of pure love zipped through her body.
Lawless was the sexiest man on the planet, hands down. And it got worse every single day. It was a wonder she could put on underwear and leave the cabin with how hot he was. And after the way he’d indulged her with Christmas participation, a few weeks back, that sexy level had risen exponentially. She’d had to do a lot of persuasive begging on her knees with her mouth open, but it had been worth it to see the nine-foot tree in the living room. Oscar had a blast climbing it.
She knew from observation that not all relationships were based on romance.
Take Zara and Rider. They were all romantic, and they loved each other to distraction. It was gorgeous to be in their presence.
Lawless wasn’t romantic. Not by conventional standards.
He didn’t bring flowers, arrange cozy dates, sit in front of a fireplace, and recite poetry.
But he’d killed for her.
He’d protected her from the moment they’d met.
He’d ensured she had an easy future where no one could hurt her.
His actionsroaredwith love.
“Hey, I was thinking.”
“Never a good sign,” he said drolly, and she pinched his thigh, leaving her hand there.
“Why do I love you again?”
“Fucked if I know, angel.”
“Big wallet and average dick. So anyway, as I was saying.”
Angela got no further because Lawless came to a screeching halt on the side of the road. The stare he sent her was hot enough to put a kink in her straight hair and a flood warning down in her tight underwear.
He snapped off the seatbelt, did the same to hers, and growled. “Get over here now.”
