Story: The Phantom Wolf
The next day, Alice suggested that the entire family go ice skating together in Seattle.
A new ice rink had opened and they could book it for a private session.
Pearl and Bree had never gone ice skating before, so Bree was really excited about the prospect of learning.
Pearl was more hesitant, but still happy to try her best and join the family in their outing.
Carlisle booked the rink and paid quite a bit extra to be able to use the ice rink without any supervision, this meant that there weren't any humans around, and that they could all be totally relaxed and be themselves without any worries.
When the coven arrived at the ice rink, all of them split off into little groups to enjoy themselves.
Carlisle and Esme skated off as a couple in perfect forms, showcasing their experience when it came to ice skating.
Edward stuck with his wife and daughter as they were new skaters.
Emmet immediately started showing off while teasing Jasper for his stiffness.
With Jasper's soldier background, he wasn't quite as flexible on the ice as the others, nor was he too comfortable on skates.
Alice and Rosalie teamed up to help teach both Bree and Pearl how to skate.
With neither of the two teenagers having gone ice skating before, the older vampires were prepared for a challenge.
Edward spent his time teaching his wife and daughter how to skate, as they had never been before.
Renesmee got the hang of it fairly quickly, but Bella's human characteristics came through, and she ended up stumbling over a lot.
Occasionally she would end up dragging Edward down with her, as he tried to keep her from falling.
Edward couldn't help but chuckle every time Bella dragged him down, it reminded him of the time when she was human and tripping over her own feet.
Renesmee ended up assisting her father in trying to teach her mother how to skate.
Bree managed to pick up Rosalie's and Alice's teachings really fast, and it quickly became clear to everyone after about 10 minutes of practice that Bree, was a natural ice skater. It also became incredibly clear, that Pearl, was not.
Despite Alice's advice, Pearl fell flat on her face once again, and groaned.
"This is hard." Pearl complained.
"You've just gotta practice. You'll get the hang of it!" Alice replied cheerily.
Just as she said that, Bella landed on her butt again and ended up pulling Edward down with her, causing him to land directly on top of her.
Seeing what had just happened, Alice quickly added to her previous statement. "You both will."
"Yeah right." Bella grumbled from beneath Edward.
Edward chuckled and gave her a kiss to comfort her, whilst he stood back up with ease. Renesmee giggled from beside them, having not been caught up in the fall, and encouraged her mother to get back up. To which Bella reluctantly did so, with Edward's help of course.
Looking down at the hybrid, who was still laying on the ice face down, Rosalie spoke up. "Come on Pearl. Get up. Try again."
Pearl muttered into the ice, not moving a muscle. "No thanks. I wanna leave with my face still intact. Staying down seems a lot less risky than trying to get back on my feet."
"You've only fallen down 8 times! You can't give up yet! Bella's fallen over 13 times, and she's dragged Edward down with her during four of those! And she's still going! You have no excuse!" Alice tried to encourage/scold the whiny hybrid.
"Hey-" As Bella began to complain about what Alice was saying, she cut herself off by loosing balance again. Edward made the wise decision to let go of her so that she didn't pull him down with her.
"Scratch that. Make it 14 times." Alice corrected herself.
Pearl huffed from her place on the ice, and remained motionless. "I'm good." She answered.
Bree skated over to try and persuade Pearl to try again. Taking Alice's place as the hybrid's teacher, so that Alice could go and assist Jasper who currently looked like a deer in headlights.
Rosalie moved over to Renesmee and started skating with the little hybrid so that Edward could focus on the struggling Bella. Which left Bree as the only teacher for Pearl.
After 40 minutes of practice, Bella had fallen a total of 34 times.
It would have been a lot more that that, if Edward hadn't been able to hold her up successfully and stop her from falling on many occasions.
But the practice had finally paid off for the couple, as Bella was skating slowly by the edges of the rink without assistance, although Edward was close by to help if she needed it.
Needless to say, Bella was doing a lot better than she was previously.
Pearl however, was doing quite a bit worse.
With Bree now being the one to teach her mate, as Alice had gone over to Jasper and Rosalie was skating with Renesmee, Bree lacked any of the experience needed to stop Pearl from falling.
She didn't yet have the capability to balance properly whilst supporting their combined weight.
So whenever Pearl went down, she went down hard.
Everyone could see how much Pearl was struggling, but no one wanted to discourage her from trying again. So they all refrained from saying just how many times she had fallen over.
That is, everyone except Emmet.
From his position on the ice (around 5 metres away from Pearl who was clinging desperately onto the side of the rink to keep her balance), Emmet started teasing his little sister.
"Hey Pearl? How many more times are you gonna fall on your face?
" He laughed. "We're at 162, and we're still counting!
If I knew how hilarious this would be, I would've brought my phone! "
Pearl growled lowly at the laughing vampire in warning.
Emmet ignored the sound and continued, "You look like a baby deer that is just learning how to walk after being born!"
"Emmet..." Rosalie tried to caution her mate, but he was too busy laughing to pay any attention.
Bree looked at Pearl, worried that she was getting upset by Emmet's comments, but when she looked to where Pearl last was, all she saw were the skates that she had previously been wearing, discarded on the ice. Her mate was no where to be seen.
Carlisle was about to step in and scold his son, but then he took notice of the hybrid's absence.
Everyone else aside from Emmet began scanning the room for the missing hybrid, but before any of them could start calling for her, the still wheezing Emmet was tackled to the ground by an invisible force.
Which knocked the wind out of the vampire completely.
The coven watched as Pearl reappeared on top of Emmet and started wrestling with him on the ice. Emmet's teasing laughter soon turned into him grunting, as he engaged in the play fight with a wide challenging grin on his face.
As soon as Pearl started laughing all of the vampires knew that the two were just playing around, and that Pearl wasn't too bothered by Emmet's comments. The majority of the vampires went back to what they were previously doing, while Emmet and Pearl continued to wrestle on the ice.
Rosalie brought Renesmee over to Bree, and the three girls started skating together.
Edward brought Bella further away from the side, in order to join Alice and Jasper who were closer to the middle, as Bella was more comfortable to try and move further in.
Carlisle and Esme took the liberty to supervise the play fight, as the two siblings could get a little out of hand at times if they were left alone together.
It wasn't long before Esme felt that she needed to step in, as Emmet and Pearl were getting dangerously close to cracking the ice beneath them from their scuffle. "That's enough you two." She called out to them.
The two physically strongest members of the family were too engrossed in their fight to hear what Esme had said, so the matriarch of the family was ignored.
Getting slightly frustrated, and even more concerned when the two siblings slid into the side of the ice rink, Esme called out in a stern voice. "Emmet! Pearl! Enough!"
This time hearing her shout, the two instantly pulled away from each other to face the matriarch. Seeing her expression, Emmet and Pearl both internally winced and simultaneously apologised for their actions. "Sorry mum." They said.
The title made Esme's heart swell, and all of her frustration and concern vanished instantaneously.
Emmet then picked Pearl up and skated off of the ice with her, as it was clear that she was done trying to be an ice skater. As he did so, Pearl mumbled into his shoulder, "I would give you a nasty look for your comments earlier, but you've already got one."
Emmet immediately burst into laughter at the unusual insult, and in his distracted state, as they exited the rink, he forgot to step over the lip, so both of the siblings were instantly sent to the ground with a loud thud.
This resulted in their wrestling match starting up again, only this time it was outside of the ice rink. As Carlisle and Esme skated over to the exit to break it up, Renesmee asked her aunt Rosalie in a curious tone, "Why do uncle Emmet and aunt Pearl fight so much?"
Rosalie responded to the kid with a warm smile on her face, completely discarding the scowl that she previously had on when her husband began fighting with Pearl again. "They care for each other deeply, and the way they bond, is by wrestling with each other. They aren't really fighting."
Renesmee looked slightly confused at the notion, but shrugged it off when her parents came over to them.
Pearl then shrieked, "Let go of my hair!"
Emmet then made a gurgling sound as Pearl had shoved her foot down Emmet's throat.
Alice and Jasper skated over to the others on the ice, and they all proceeded to watch as Carlisle and Esme pulled Emmet and Pearl away from each other, and scolded the two supernatural beings like toddlers.
After the coven's session in the ice rink ended, they returned home. Where they were then greeted by an energetic Jacob on their doorstep. He had come by to see his imprint, unaware that they were out, so he had waited on the porch for them to return.
The coven settled in for a quiet afternoon when they arrived back at the house.
Emmet and Pearl were placed in time out by Carlisle and Esme, as their fight had gotten largely out of hand back at the ice rink.
Members of the coven couldn't help but chuckle as both Pearl and Emmet complained from their respective corners in the living room about how unfair this was.
Jacob had no idea what was happening, but Renesmee filled him in with what she had understood, and by the end of her explanation, Jacob was rolling on the floor laughing at the two.
This resulted in Emmet and Pearl reaching a silent agreement to halt their insults for each other, and turn them onto the shifter instead.
So when Esme eventually released them from their time out, the two of them immediately started a barrage of insults aimed at Jacob. To which he retaliated. One thing lead to another, and all three of them were placed back in time out by the matriarch, 15 minutes later.
Sitting on her mothers lap, Renesmee asked Bella a question. "Mum? Can we all do some art together?"
Bella rose an eyebrow at the request, but she quickly agreed as everyone voiced their agreement to participate from different areas of the house. No one saw any issue with doing the activity, as art was quite relaxing and usually fairly quiet.
Bree, Pearl and Esme gathered a bunch of different art supplies, and laid them out in the garden outside. Since Renesmee wanted to paint, Esme decided that all of the art would take place outside to spare her beautiful house of any possible damage.
Everyone participated in the art one way or another.
Edward and Bella did some simple drawings together, while Jacob made some bracelets alongside Alice.
Esme spent her time designing a new house that could be built for the family in the future.
Carlisle sat beside his wife and just observed her in her element, admiring his mates beauty the entire time.
He did do a small drawing of a flower for his granddaughter when she asked, but otherwise, he only watched his family create art.
Jasper was roped into painting with Bree upon her request. Rosalie and Renesmee were playing with paints on a large canvas together.
At first, Pearl and Emmet had a competition to see who could come up with the better drawing.
Renesmee was supposed to judge it and decide on the winner, but when she announced that she liked "Grandpa Carlisle's more" they tossed the idea in the trash.
Instead, the two self proclaimed siblings began painting a picture together of the forest that surrounded their house.
One thing lead to another, and the two troublemakers began a paint war. Suddenly Esme became very grateful that she had pushed for this activity to take place outside of the house.
When Emmet accidentally lobbed some paint and hit Edward in the face instead of Pearl.
Chaos more or less erupted. Jacob couldn't stop himself from laughing at the mind reader, and Edward responded by dumping a bucket of yellow paint on Jacob's head.
Jacob then threw himself at Edward, the two boys rolled around and fell into Jasper, which knocked over a can of blue paint that was next to him, and it's contents splashed onto Alice.
Alice grabbed onto a bucket of red paint and threw it at the boys in retaliation.
Part of the splash landed on Pearl instead of the boys, and the hybrid's attention was diverted to the pixie.
Emmet took the opportunity and tackled a distracted Pearl into the purple paint bucket.
Rosalie and Bella were quick to scoop Renesmee and her art piece up from the floor and take her inside the house, before any of them could get caught in the crosshairs.
Bree rescued what art there was left, alongside Esme and Carlisle, then they too retreated back inside the house to avoid the flying paint.
By the time the group of 6 finally finished their paint war, the backyard was a mess, and they were all covered in bright colours.
Esme ordered them to clean up the yard and then themselves, in a very stern motherly tone.
The group did so diligently, and once the backyard was spotless, they were left to figure out how they were going to clean themselves up.
As Esme had prohibited them from entering the house in their current state.
Reaching a solution, Pearl asked a question, "How far do you reckon the lake is from here?"
Emmet grinned and loudly announced, "Whoever is last to get there has to take the blame for all of this!"
At his words, Edward and Alice took off running towards the lake without a second thought. There was no way they were going to take the blame. Jasper, Pearl and Emmet were quick to follow after the two, leaving a brightly coloured shifter in the dust.
"WAIT HANG ON!" Jacob shouted after them in disbelief.
Quickly shifting into his wolf, he attempted to catch up to the vampires in order to overtake them. He didn't start the fight, so he shouldn't get blamed for it. As he ran, he caught a glimpse of two vampires up ahead and sped up his pace, desperately trying to overtake them.
As he got closer, the two vampires turned out to be Alice and Emmet.
The two had been swiftly overtaken by Pearl and Jasper.
Since no rules were outlined, Jasper had grabbed onto Pearl's shoulders and forced her to give him a piggy back.
Pearl was too focused on trying to catch up to Edward to bother with the Texan who was catching a ride on her back.
With the head start Edward had gotten, he was able to make it to the lake first. Stopping at the embankment to celebrate his victory, he was taken by surprise when Pearl and Jasper barrelled into him at full speed not even a second later.
Pearl hadn't anticipated for him to stop, and thought that they were trying to be the first in the lake, so she (along with Jasper, who was still on her back) ran face first into Edward, and all three of them went tumbling into the lake.
Emmet and Alice were just barely able to stay ahead of Jacob's wolf, and entered the lake's waters a few seconds before the shifter did.
Coming up to the surface, Emmet yelled, "Hell yeah! Jacob takes the blame!"
Jacob yipped and growled at the vampire, while in his wolf form. Clearly complaining about the results.
"Don't be such a sore looser. You lost. We won, fair and square." Jasper commented from within the water, next to Edward and Pearl.
"Oh? Says the vampire who made me give him a piggy back ride!" Pearl replied in irritation.
"Wait what?" Edward questioned in disbelief. He had been tackled into the water so fast, that he hadn't noticed what position the two were in when they had collided with him.
"Jas caught a ride on Pearl's back!" Alice complained. Her mate had used a cheap tactic to get ahead of her, and she wasn't happy about it.
"That's definitely cheating." Jacob commented. Having shifted back into a human and putting his paint coloured shorts back on.
"No it wasn't! We never outlined any rules. My actions were perfectly legal!" Jasper defended himself.
"I call bullshit!" Pearl shouted, and she dunked Jasper underwater with her hand.
Jasper came back up to the surface and threw a wave of water towards her with his arm. The wave hit both Pearl and Edward. When the two emerged from under the water, Emmet yelled with childish glee, "WATER FIGHT!"
When the group eventually returned home, completely clean of paint, but absolutely soaking wet. 3 hours had passed since the altercation with the art supplies.
Jasper was forced to take the blame for the others, because the group all deemed that his tactic of hitching a ride on Pearl's back was cheating and unfair.
