Story: The Phantom Wolf
Over the next few days, a constant amount of worry flowed through the house and it's occupants, like a raging river.
Bella was undergoing the change into a vampire and yet she was as still and as silent, as a rock. Her unusual silence and stillness, constantly made Edward question whether his venom was really working or not. Despite Carlisle's reassurance that it was, he still remained concerned for his wife.
Renesmee was supposed to be a new born baby, and yet she looked like a one month old after just one day on this earth outside of her mother's womb. The child's increased growth rate was highly concerning to the coven.
And although the mother daughter duo did draw a lot of concern from the family.
The person they were most worried for, was their unconscious vampire shifter hybrid, who lay on a bed, (in her joint bedroom with Bree) next to her imprint and beside her adoptive big brother.
From the moment Pearl collapsed, Bree and Emmet refused to leave her side.
When Pearl had fallen unconscious outside the house in her wolf form, the shift back to her vampire form had been automatic. This allowed Carlisle to bring her inside the house instantaneously, and he was able to begin giving life saving medical care.
With Pearl receiving medical attention by the coven leader, Esme took it upon herself to help Leah with her injuries. The female shifter was incredibly reluctant to accept her assistance at first, but with both Seth and Jacob pressuring her, Leah eventually relented.
After Leah's gash was treated and wrapped up, Jacob asked for an explanation from his beta. He desperately wanted to know what had happened with the two sisters after they didn't return.
When Seth agreed with Jacob and asked to know as well, Leah finally shared what had taken place over the last few days.
"I was able to get to Pearl in time, but, she was badly injured.
I had to engage in a fight when I got there.
Sam was standing over her as she was trying to get up, so I lunged at him.
I managed to get him away from her. There was a lot of snarling, growling and barking, but the gist of it is, that we were able to get a short opening when Pearl made us both intangible.
Sam and his pack went right through us." Leah explained.
"She can make other people's bodies ghosts as well?" Jacob questioned out loud. He knew what Leah meant when she mentioned becoming intangible. After all, Pearl had used that trick on him the night of Bella's wedding.
"No idea." Leah answered. Then she continued, "Anyways, after Pearl did that, she passed out. I heard her heart beat slow down, and then, it just, stopped." She revealed.
"... What?" Seth whispered, his emotions getting the best of him, as his eyes once again, filled with tears.
"Her heart stopped." Leah reaffirmed.
"But I heard her heart. When she jumped out in front of Bree, it was still beating. It was quiet, but it was still there." Jacob said in disbelief.
Leah nodded.
Seth piped up in a quiet voice. "Does that mean you did CPR on her?" He questioned timidly.
Leah shook her head.
Jacob raised his eyebrow and asked in a confused tone, "Then what did you do?"
"She's a vampire." Leah stated. "Vampires don't usually have a heartbeat. So I figured, unless she was thrown into fire, she'd be fine. So I picked her up and carried her away from Sam's pack before any of them could get back up and attempt to stop us."
"Why didn't you come back here?" Seth hesitantly asked.
Leah paused, then responded. "I don't know."
"Why didn't you answer me when I called for you through the pack link?" Seth asked, louder this time.
"I never heard you." Leah answered, slight confusion apparent in her voice.
Remaining silent for a while, Jacob slowly spoke up. "You went into pack hiding." He muttered.
"What's that?" The two Clearwaters asked.
"It's when a shifter completely shuts down all communication with their pack, so that they can focus solely, on either protecting themselves, or protecting others.
It hardly ever takes place, that's why very few shifters know about it.
" Jacob revealed. "What did you feel like, those three days you were with Pearl?
What was going through your head?" He asked Leah.
Wanting to understand exactly what had taken place.
"... I didn't feel anything." Leah replied. "I lay next to her in my wolf form the whole time. I was always on alert, keeping an eye on my surroundings, never once letting my guard down. Nothing really went through my head, other than the instinct to protect my sister and guard her with my life."
Jacob nodded and didn't ask anything else. Seth also remained silent, taking in the information that Leah had given them.
Their silence was interrupted by Jasper when he walked into the room and immediately asked in a serious voice, "When did her heart start beating again?"
Leah scrunched her face up slightly at his interruption, but answered the question all the same. "On the third day. When she regained consciousness." The female shifter revealed.
"Then what happened?" Jasper persisted.
Leah gave him a small glare, then continued. "When she woke up, she was barely able to stand, let alone walk. It was only when the sounds of fighting reached our ears that she was able to push herself back up, and we started making our way back to your house."
"We never heard you coming." Seth whispered, whilst wondering why that was the case.
"That's Pearl's gift." Jasper answered the silent question. "It must've activated as a defence mechanism from the moment she woke up. The two of you would have been completely hidden from both mind and scent as you made your way back here." He said calmly.
"... wow." Seth mumbled out in awe of what his sister could do.
A moment later, Leah asked her own question, directed at the Texan vampire. "How is she able to do that? The invisibility thing and becoming untouchable?"
Jasper stared at her, contemplating whether or not he should respond.
Jacob and Seth looked to him for answers as well, as they were also quite curious why she had an ability of that nature.
Eventually, Jasper answered her, although his tone did have an underlying layer of spite and anger.
"When a human is turned into a vampire, one of their key characteristics is heightened upon the change.
It could just be a simple enhancement, like extra strength or beauty.
But it could also develop into a gift. When I was human I was quite charismatic, that's developed into the gift of an empath.
It's why I can control and manipulate peoples emotions. "
"So why invisibility?" Leah pressed.
Jasper responded harshly. "As a human Pearl felt invisible. Like she didn't belong anywhere. That translated into her having the ability of a ghost upon her change into a vampire."
Seth and Jacob visibly flinched at the vampire's words and tone. Leah remained motionless, not showing any physical signs of discomfort, but internally, her emotions were at war.
Sensing what the Clearwater siblings were feeling, Jasper paused in his verbal assault and calmed himself down as much as he could.
After letting out a breath, he said in a neutral tone directed towards the Clearwater siblings, "Carlisle's finished up the surgery on Pearl.
If you want to sit with her, alongside Emmet and Bree, you're welcome to.
" Finishing his statement, he quickly left the room to return to his mates side, no longer wanting to deal with the shifters who had caused his hybrid sister, so much pain.
The two shifters did end up taking Jasper up on his offer. And spent a short amount of time with their unconscious sister, once every day.
Every member of the family came to check on Pearl throughout the three days. Of course, Renesmee was excluded from that list. Edward wanted her to meet her Aunt Pearl when the hybrid was awake and healthy.
Strangely enough, Bree was also yet to meet Renesmee.
The young vampire spent every minute by Pearl's side.
For she feared that if she left, Pearl would disappear again, and she'd feel the same mind numbing emptiness that had plagued her mind since had Pearl vanished.
Although logically, she knew that wouldn't happen, Bree's fear prevailed, so she remained by her mate's side, refusing to meet the baby that she had fought so desperately to protect.
The house was in a constant state of unspoken tension and concern. That was until, the human's heart, finally stopped beating, indicating that Bella's transformation was complete.
