Story: The Phantom Wolf
After they snuck away from the rest of the family and entered the couple's bedroom, Pearl activated her gift to make sure that all three of them were concealed. Ensuring that no words or thoughts, would escape the room.
"Okay. Out with it. What's going to happen?" Pearl demanded, her tone fierce and her voice serious.
Jasper looked to Alice, silently wondering what she had seen.
Under their gazes, Alice slowly revealed the contents of what she had seen after the idea of witnesses was brought up. She had managed to keep the vision from the forefront of her mind so that Edward wouldn't have been able to see it. "We have to leave." The pixie spoke up quietly.
A small growl slipped from Pearl's throat, but she managed to silence it quickly. Jasper stared at his mate in surprise, not expecting that to be her answer.
Alice continued talking, directing her words towards Pearl. "I saw something. A brief glimpse of someone. I think they're like Renesmee."
Jasper's and Pearl's eyes widened at the new information.
"I didn't see an exact location. So me and Jasper have to follow the leads we've got and hunt them down alone, as soon as possible."
"Why not tell the others?" Pearl hesitantly asked.
"Aro cannot know that I'm not with you. Not yet. Our disappearance has to be realistic. Like we abandoned you." She further explained.
The hybrid was about to ask why, but she stopped herself. Jasper and Pearl could both hear the unusual seriousness that laced Alice's voice, so they couldn't help but nod and agree to her demand.
"Pearl. You cannot tell them. They must think that we ran away. You'll have to keep your thoughts hidden from Edward... and eventually... Aro as well." Alice said firmly to the hybrid.
"I can do that." Pearl replied confidently. Still feeling quite concerned, she tried to gather as much information as possible before her siblings departed. "What else can you tell me? What's the best way for me to help?" Pearl asked, her voice somewhat pleading.
Alice went silent as she scanned through potential futures. Once she was finished, she swiftly replied with, "You will be needed here. Not just for our coven, but for the packs as well. The Quileutes, will need your assistance as more witnesses arrive."
Pearl silently grumbled about how she doesn't owe the packs anything, but she was willing to put her grudge aside if it's to protect her family. A moment later, the hybrid nodded in understanding, and before she deactivated her gift and left the room, she muttered to her siblings, "Good luck."
As the family started packing their bags, Sam appeared on the Cullen's doorstep with a letter in his hand. He had already texted Pearl to let her know that he was coming onto her territory.
Bowing his head as a sign of respect towards Pearl, Sam then addressed the mostly vampiric group. "Alice asked me to give you that. She and Jasper crossed through our lands last night." The shifter said, as he handed the short letter to Carlisle.
"They've left us." Carlisle announced after reading the letter.
"Why?" Rosalie demanded.
"She didn't say." The patriarch answered sadly, and looked back down to the letter with a downcast expression on his face. He read it over again in hopes that new information would appear for him to read.
Pearl kept her face devoid of emotion as her family took in what Carlisle had told them.
She had a job to do, and she wasn't going to let Alice and Jasper down.
From the moment she left their room last night, she'd hidden her mind from her brother.
The mask was still up now, and she had no intention of letting it falter, not even for a second.
Bella stepped closer to Carlisle. "Can I see that?" She asked. Carlisle handed Bella the letter without complaint, so that the newborn could read it as well.
Soon after, Bella, Edward, Jacob and Renesmee left for Alaska to get the remainder of the Denali coven to become witnesses.
Emmet and Rosalie left to talk to some friends in Finland, whilst Carlisle and Esme decided to head to London.
Upon Pearl's suggestion, Bree left to accompany Rosalie and Emmet on their quest to find another coven to stand witness for them.
Pearl trusted Emmet to keep her imprint safe, and she told the family when they asked why she wasn't accompanying any of them, that she was going to wait for witnesses to arrive and keep the packs in check.
Since Jacob was going to leave to Alaska with his imprint, he would be unable to do so, and she wasn't about to let Sam's pack have free reign.
After all of the coven members vacated the territory to start their search, Pearl travelled through the reservation to get to Sam's house. Once they spotted her approaching from the pack house's window, Sam and the boys emerged to greet her and find out why she was there.
Facing the Uley pack, Pearl spoke in a calm and collected tone, but she was firm and authoritative in her approach so that they knew that she wasn't messing around.
"My family has gone to gather witnesses, in order to protect Renesmee.
There will be a large amount of vampires entering my land, and they will likely be crossing through your land to get there. "
Paul immediately started growling at the thought, but a stern look from both Sam and Pearl, quickly silenced him.
"How do you want us to respond?" Sam asked the hybrid, trying to be diplomatic. Even though she was on his land, Sam still treated her as his alpha. The last thing he wanted was another fight.
"Unless they attempt to feed from your tribe, do not engage with them. We will be asking the witnesses to hunt elsewhere, so they shouldn't cause any problems of that nature for you." Pearl calmly responded.
"Understood." Sam nodded in acknowledgement of the order.
Jared, Embry and Quil nodded their heads in agreement with their alpha, but Paul had a look of disbelief on his face. Suddenly, he shouted out, "Are you kidding me?! We're just gonna let a bunch of bloodsuckers cross through our land?!"
Pearl directed her gaze to Paul instantaneously, tearing it away from the fairly submissive alpha. "Have you got a problem with that?" Pearl asked, an underlying threat in her tone.
Paul picked up on it, but his anger wouldn't simmer down, he was too pissed off to care about the potential consequences. "Yes! I've got a fucking problem with it!" He roared.
Sam and Jared attempted to silence him, but the hot head paid them no mind.
"Luckily, I don't care for your opinion. So sit down and shut up. Unless of course your gonna try and do something about it?" The hybrid's voice was cold, her golden eyes pierced into his very soul, challenging him to speak up against her again.
Her response only made him more angry, when his body started shaking, Paul made no effort to stop the shift from taking place.
The rest of the Uley pack quickly separated themselves from the grey wolf, not wanting to get involved in whatever was about to take place.
Sam made the wise decision to back up along with the rest of his pack, the alpha had no desire to face Pearl in a fight again.
As soon as his paws touched the ground, the grey wolf made a lunge for the hybrid. His teeth were bared, Paul was ready to sink his fangs into her hardened unnatural flesh and rip the freak of nature apart.
Pearl's response to his attack, was to not move at all.
She stayed in her position, completely unbothered by the raging wolf coming to strike her down.
Without moving a muscle, Pearl simply activated her gift and became intangible.
The moment Paul's wolf passed through her ghostly body, Pearl reversed her gift and grabbed onto the boy's tail.
With all her strength, she proceeded to slam the grey mass of fur into the ground on her left side, then over to her right side, then back to her left side again.
When the hybrid let go of Paul's tail, he shifted back into his human form because of the extraordinary amount of pain that was coursing through his body.
In a voice void of any emotion, Pearl addressed the hot head of the Uley pack. "I'm stronger than you. Don't forget that."
Turning back to the now trembling Sam, Pearl continued saying what she was talking about before. Not acknowledging what had just happened between her and a member of his pack.
Totally ignoring the shifter who was now laying on the floor in pain, she said, "With the amount of vampires we are expecting to come, I believe it's reasonable to predict that more members of the tribe are going to shift in response to that.
Their natures will compel them to join the pack, whether they are ready to, or not.
How many teenagers are there that have the wolf gene in their veins? "
It took a minute for Sam to respond, whether that was from fear or because he was thinking, Pearl couldn't tell. But the alpha's body was still trembling, so she knew that her presence here made him very nervous.
"Any teens with the gene who are yet to shift, are all younger than Seth. It shouldn't be possible for them to-"
Pearl cut Sam off. "I think we've already established that the legends do not tell us everything. Nor do the council have all of the answers. It's reasonable to assume that your pack will grow. So prepare for that possibility." She ordered firmly.
Sam nodded hesitantly, still slightly unsure but he wasn't about to argue with her. It was pretty obvious what would happen if he did. The scene of Pearl tossing Paul's wolf around like a rag doll played on repeat in Sam's brain.
Pearl continued, "When Jacob returns, he will be on the lookout for any new shifters.
As will I. I have no intention of building my own pack, but whilst this is all taking place, I will be taking on the responsibilities of an alpha.
So I will be assisting wherever I am needed.
I'm telling you now, if that happens to be on your land, I will be crossing into your territory, and I will not be asking for permission to do so. Is that clear?"
Sam nodded his head in affirmation, along with the rest of his pack. "Yes alpha." They chorused, even Paul mumbled his reply along with the others from his place on the ground.
Having said everything that she needed to, Pearl then turned on her heels and sped out of the Quileute territory, returning home to the Cullen house, to await the first witnesses arrival.
