“I expected nothing less,” he acknowledged with a smile, then stood up and strode to a small mini-bar in the corner of his room, right by the window. My heart stammered at his proximity to the window.
“Aren’t you scared someone might shoot you through the windows?” I asked him. “I’m sure you have a buttload of enemies. Being a criminal and all.”
He glanced over his shoulder. “The windows are bulletproof.”
“Oh.” I guess it was safe after all. If a bullet couldn’t pierce through the window, a body certainly couldn’t fly out of it.
“And you're right,” he continued. “I have a buttload of enemies. Are those the words they taught you in Yale?”
“That and fuck,” I retorted sarcastically. “You shouldn’t hang around the windows too much if you have a buttload of enemies,” I added nonchalantly, watching him pour two glasses.
He came back, handing one to me. I have had enough alcohol to last me a lifetime, but I took it anyhow. The cognac barely touched my lips when he spoke again.
“Worried about me?” he joked.
“Nope.”
He chuckled, like he didn’t believe me. He lowered his big frame down onto his chair next to me.
“I have a proposition for you,” he said, his voice deep and firm.
“I’m scared to hear it,” I retorted dryly.
He chuckled. “I doubt it. The woman that is brave enough to steal from the mafia should be able to handle this proposition like a piece of cake.” He arched an eyebrow at me to punctuate the point. “A walk in the park,” he added.
Sirens blasted in my brain, but I couldn’t do anything but wait for him to reveal whatever it was he needed to say.
“Don’t keep me in suspense then,” I said, hiding my nervousness behind my sarcastic tone. I took a sip of my drink as Liam watched me like a hungry wolf.
His eyes darkened and locked on my mouth. “I’m going to enjoy fucking that sassy mouth of yours.”
I choked on the cognac and started coughing loudly. He caught me by surprise. Unlike anyone I had ever met, Liam could go from a business tone to flirtatious to pure filth in the same second. He knew exactly what he was doing to me, I had no doubt.
“You’d let me deepthroat you, wouldn’t you?”
Fuck!
I had to fight the urge to nod my head. His tone was dark, pure sex and my thighs clenched with need. God, his filthy words would be my doom. They set me aflame and my pussy throbbed in response. If another man would have said those words, I would have punched them in the eye. With this man, I wanted to askwhenhe’d fuck my mouth.
To ensure I did no such thing, I took a sip of the cognac.
“My proposition is that you marry me.” I choked on my drink again and spit it all over the table. I eyed him through my coughing fit, expecting him to laugh. Anything. All I could see through my watering eyes was his serious face.
Juliette never told me her father was crazy.
CHAPTER35
Liam
All things considered, she took the news well.
She hadn’t walked away. Or slapped me. Not that she’d ever succeed. I watched millions of emotions flicker across her expression. It wasn’t the brightest idea I’d ever had, but it was the most effective one to keep her and my family protected.
With their endeavor in Chicago, they had brought on more shit. I should lock all four of them up in a room and feed them twice a day.
“I’m not marrying you,” she hissed, her eyes like two thunderbolts ready to strike me at any moment.
“It’s either that or you go to jail.” Her eyes widened with disbelief. “Don’t think I won’t hesitate to turn you in. I have the tape and intend to use it if you don’t cooperate.”
