“Get in the fucking trunk,” he snapped.
I was in the trunk the next second, bringing my knees up and curling into a ball.
The trunk door slammed shut, and darkness followed.
CHAPTER57
Liam
“Calm down, Wynter.”
The truth was I had a hard time keeping my own cool, but it wouldn’t help my wife if Wynter lost her shit and couldn’t give me all the details.
“Davina was supposed to take my Jeep,” she said, her voice still shaking. “But it’s still here. And her purse is here. That was an hour ago!”
“Where are you?”
“Northwell Health Ice Center.”
“Get to a public place,” I ordered her. “Leave everything as is in that parking lot. Do not go back inside the rink. I’ll send someone to fetch you.”
“But-”
“Wynter, do as I say,” I said firmly.
“Okay,” she agreed. “I have a friend here with me. So I won’t be alone. Don’t send anyone to fetch me. I’m fine.”
“Good.” At least it was one less thing to worry about. But I wouldn’t leave her out there, vulnerable. I owed it to my sister to keep my niece safe. I wouldn’t fail her too. “Shoot me your address, and I’ll have one of my men come and get you.”
“No, no,” she protested. “I won’t leave my friend’s side. I promise.”
“Wynter,” I barked. “I don’t have time for this.”
“I’m safe,” she assured. “My friend won’t leave my side.”
Who in the fuck was this friend? “What friend?”
“Ummm, you don’t know him,” she muttered. “From college.” She was lying. I’d stake my life on it. But considering Wynter never had an interest in boys, maybe she was worried we’d scare him away. When it came to boys, Wynter was different.
“You guys go look for Davina,” she continued in a breathless tone as if she was scared I’d take something precious away from her. Fine, I’d let her spend time with this boy, but the moment my wife was safe in my arms, I’d find out his name and everything about him. “I-I think-” She trailed off, never finishing the sentence and an unease climbed up my spine.
“Did you girls do anything stupid? Anything I don’t know about?” I growled.
“Umm, no. I don’t think so. Nothing other than what you already know.” That wasn’t convincing at all.
“Wynter,” I warned. “Whatever it is, I need to know so I can find her.”
She hesitated and it took all I got not to bellow into the phone, demanding she tell me everything. But I knew it wouldn’t work. Not with Wynter.
“I-I don’t know but maybe Garrett came for her.” Finally! It was good that I kept my temper in check.
“Her ex-boyfriend?” I inquired. I furrowed my eyebrows, unsure why the guy would bother with an ex-girlfriend. That would be an extremely poor way to handle a breakup. “Why would he do that?”
“He’s been harassing her ever since we burned down his house,” she explained. “Texting her and calling her. Still trying to blackmail her for us burning the house down. Even yesterday before-”
Two heartbeats. My blood boiled. But I kept my cool. “Keep going, Wynter.”
“T-there is Davina’s bra on the ground,” Wynter choked out. My fingers tightened the phone so hard, a protesting crackle warned me I was close to breaking it. I forced myself to loosen my grip.
