“Congratulations,” I said, squeezing Sen’s shoulder.

He looked so fucking happy. He told me a few years ago that I’d be his best man, but I hadn’t expected him to actually choose me when the time came.

We’d become so close since we reconnected, and I’d already asked him to be up there with me at my wedding next month, and since Kai was Roman’s best man, they’d get to walk together, which would be far less awkward than me walking with West today.

It didn’t help that he’d disappeared after we reached the dais, then showed up in a t-rex costume with his twin sister, Willow, during the vows.

“Are you guys staying here?” I asked.

“We’re gonna go back to Maine for a little bit since Kai’s dad isn’t doing well. They don’t expect him to make it through next year.”

“Damn. I’m sorry.”

“It’s hard, but when Eli’s gone, Savannah will come back here with us so we can be close. That’ll help Kai a lot.”

“It will. When you’re back, we’ll be able to see each other a lot more. ”

His demeanor lightened. “I know. Have you told Roman?”

“Not yet. I’m about to.”

“Well, go do it. Stop stalling.”

“Fine. Don’t you have a first dance to get to?”

He looked over at Kai, who was already staring. When they met on the dance floor, I looked for Roman. He was leaning against a wall with his trusty tablet in hand, probably drawing Kai and Sen dancing.

I joined him, and he glanced at me briefly. “Hey.”

“Hey back, baby.” Leaning closer, I saw him making a rough sketch of the grooms. “That’ll be beautiful.”

“I know.”

I breathed a laugh and waited for him to get more of it down. Once Linc called West up to the stage in a grand proposal scheme, I turned to Roman.

“Do you miss it here?”

He looked up at the stage, then at the tablet. “Yeah. My family is here, and my friends. They’re leaving but still.”

“Kai and Sen will be back, and I’m sure that West and Linc will be here as much as they can. I think they said they’d keep a house here to stay in during the offseason. I feel like Tilian and Brooks will stay here too.”

“Til would hate New York,” he agreed. “Too many people. He’d probably never leave the house.”

“And Brooks will do anything Tilian wants.”

“Exactly.”

“So, we’re the only ones who aren’t here.”

He didn’t answer. Even though he was working on the drawing, he wasn’t entirely focused on it.

“Seattle,” I said.

“Yeah, we’re in Seattle.”

I stepped in front of him and took his tablet away. “Mariners.”

He put a hand on my chest and stared at me. “What?”

“Mariners,” I repeated, a smile forming on my face. “Me. Them. You get it.”

“Oh my god. You’re gonna play for Seattle?”

“Damn right, I am. I still can’t go crazy with social media and the campaigns, but they’ll let me do more and they’ll actually back a lot of our efforts. ”

“That’s fucking amazing,” he exclaimed. The way his eyes brightened filled me with joy. “What about your house?”

“It’s just a house. We can buy one here. Together.”

He covered his mouth as he tried to stifle his emotions. We were almost always together already, but he still had to come to Washington sometimes since he was working with a local gaming company on some projects, and I knew that he missed his family.

“We can get any house we want,” I told him. “We can build one.”

“That actually sounds really cool. We can make it whatever we want.”

After setting the tablet on a table, I wrapped an arm around his waist and took his hand. We’d practiced for our first dance, so that was what we did now, despite the song not being right. As long as it was me and him, it was absolutely perfect.

“It’s our whole future, baby. Let’s make it ours.”
