Jai

Well, he wasn’t fired, so that was comforting. He made sure to keep his head down and get the work given to him done as quickly and efficiently as possible. He’d been given more data entry, photocopying and all around grunt work to do that day. Not that he was complaining, even though it was boring and repetitive.

Reid, the alpha from the day before, seemed to find pleasure in finding more work for him to do as if he was expecting Jai to screw up again, so that he could use it against him.

“You’re basically my bitch, doing all the jobs I don’t want to do,” Reid taunted, but Jaimie made sure not to engage. He made sure to keep his head down and get through the day as invisible as possible.

He didn’t reply to Reid's taunts, choosing instead to focus on all the tasks he had in front of him. But he couldn’t help but feel like he was back in school, where he was bullied for his red hair, for being weird, and for having no friends. Wasn’t it supposed to get better when you got older he found himself thinking?

At one point during the day the alpha, he now knew was the CEO Nickolas Ricci, made an appearance on the floor he was working on. Jai made sure to keep his head down and make himself invisible, hoping he wouldn’t be seen. Which was darn near impossible with the open plan setting of the office. Like the day before, the alpha’s presence had his whole body at attention, even though he tried to pretend he was unaware of his presence.

But from under his lashes, he hadn’t missed the way those dark eyes had surveyed him. He’d actually had to force his body into staying still, so he wouldn’t give away that he knew that the alpha was looking at him. But he had to admit to feeling like he was free-falling from the top of the world, having such intense scrutiny from such a formidable alpha.

It had his heart racing so fast he felt like it was about to jump right out of his body. His skin prickled with awareness and tightened with goose flesh appearing. But as quickly as he was there, he was gone again. Making him call himself five kinds of fool for falling for the head honcho in charge. Like such a man would give him more than a passing look.

It was almost the end of his workday and he realized he had kept chickening out on going to apologize properly for his faux pas the day before. He knew it was probably foolish of him to show up in the boss’s office, but what else could he do?

He decided against taking coffee up the elevator and went for a cold bottle of water and juice for the hot day. He made his way to the alpha’s office without being stopped and turned back, which he thought of as a minor miracle. Even though a part of him hoped that someone would turn him away and he would chalk it up to it being out of his control after making his best effort. But apparently, luck wasn’t on his side. Or it was… he wasn’t even sure at this point.

He knocked on the outer door of his office and was invited in. “Can I help you?” An efficient looking beta asked, looking up from the computer screen.

“I’ve brought up some refreshments for Mr. Ricci.” Jai managed to get out.

The beta looked him up and down, before nodding and pointing towards the second set of doors. He walked towards them and knocked. On hearing the “Enter,” he was about to turn around and use his elbow, as he’d done with the other door, but the beta stood from his seat, walked over and opened it for him, “Go in, Mr. Knox.”

The first thing that occurred to Jai was how the fuck did the beta know his name? But then he decided that he’d probably made such an ass of himself the day before, the office gossip train must have moved quickly.

He wasn’t sure what he’d imagined, but even his imagination couldn’t have come up with the sheer opulence that was the office of the CEO of the Ricci Corporation. It was a huge space with a mix of contemporary and antique decor. Although he had to say it was very lacking in anything personal. But he forgot about all that when he took in the alpha sitting behind the huge glass desk with his eyes on him.
