Nickolas stared at his mother and realized that if he had ended up married to Asa, he would probably end up like his parents. They barely spoke to each other, and lord knew there was no affection between them. He didn’t want that kind of life. The worst part was, his grandfathers, on his dad’s side had been a love match, and Nickolas knew they hadn’t forced his parents to get married.

“What happened to you, mother?” Nickolas asked. “Don’t you remember being young and in love?”

“Love,” She snorted, “I was once in love with a young man. He was beautiful, but poor as a church mouse. Nobody wants to live like that. Trust me. This omega probably looks at you and sees dollar signs.”

“Like you with dad?” Nickolas asked derisively.

His mother didn’t even flinch, “Your father and I came to a mutual agreement that works for us.” His mother said smoothly.

“That’s why I’ve never seen father smile,” Graham said under his breath for Nickolas to hear, making him snort.

“Well I’m happy for you and your agreement, but I’m out. I don’t want an agreement when it comes to my marriage,” Nickolas said.

“If you persist with this foolishness, your father and I will have to consider removing you as the head of the Ricci Corporation.” His mother said in the same tone, not even raising her voice. Sometimes Nickolas wondered if she could even show any emotions – if she even had any.

“You could try, but you’ll find it difficult to convince the board, I imagine, seeing as profits have been at their highest since I took over, and father left the company once I graduated, so I don’t imagine he has any plans to step back up and run it. So do not threaten me, mother,” Nickolas said in the same even tone.

“Why can’t you just do as everyone else does. Keep the plaything in a nice apartment you can visit whenever you want. You know he is not Ricci marriage material.” His mother sniffed, nose in the air.

“You say that like we are royalty, mother.Seriously?” Nickolas snorted at the thought.

“This family has a reputation to uphold. We cannot be seen mixing with some common gold-digger you enjoy sticking your knot into. Honestly, Nickolas, what were you thinking?” His mother said.

“I warned you, mother, to tread carefully when speaking about my omega. And that’s what he is. If you wish to carry out your threat, go for it. I will gladly step away from the company. But he is not a negotiable factor. I will not be marrying Asa, and that’s that.” Nickolas said.

“Anthony, don’t you have anything to add,” his mother said to his father, who had not chimed in once during the whole conversation.

His father lowered his book and finally met Nickolas’ gaze for a moment, before turning to his mother and saying, “Looks like his mind’s made up.” Before going back to reading.

His mother hissed, “Is that all you have to say? Don’t you care that we will be made a laughing stock if Nickolas persists in this craziness?”

“Oh, calm down, woman, as the boy said, we are not royalty.” His father said.

Nickolas wasn’t sure what was happening and he definitely never expected support – if that was it was – from his father. He wasn’t sure where it was coming from. He’d always thought of his dad as the most passive man on earth who always followed his mother’s lead.

“Thank you, father,” Nickolas said. He thought about calling him dad, but honestly, they didn’t have that kind of relationship. But he would take the support.

“Well, looks like you just need some more time to think things over, maybe when you do, we can have Asa and his parents over and smooth out this whole mess.” His mother said as if the conversation they just had never happened.

Nickolas didn’t even bother replying. He knew his mother was a lost cause. Besides, when he married Jai, maybe that would help her get the message. “As usual, mother, it’s lovely to see you, but I find I have lost my appetite, so I will be taking a rain check on lunch.”

“Of course, honey, so much to think about,” She said

“Right,” Nickolas replied.

“Graham, would you like to see me out?” Nickolas said to his brother because he knew Graham was looking for an excuse to leave too.

“Of course,” Graham said, shooting Nickolas a grateful look.

“Mother. Father.” Nickolas said, before taking his leave.

He left the sunroom, walking side by side with Graham. Once they were out of earshot of his parents, Graham said, “Must be some omega to make you not simply go along with mother’s plans.”

Nickolas looked at his brother and raised an eyebrow, “Explain.”

“Oh please… I love you, Nic, but you’re like the perfect child. You went to the schools she picked, took over the company like they planned, and agreed to the marriage she wanted when she picked Asa. You never complained or rebelled.”

Nickolas looked at his brother, “That’s not true G, trust me.”
