Jai
Pain gripped Jai’s belly and woke him up making him gasp. Between his swollen ankles and sore back, Jai had barely left the house in the past month, so when he realized what was happening, he was very happy and a little terrified, too.
He looked at his alpha still asleep in bed and gently lifted Nickolas’ hand off him and did the series of twist and turns that got him out of bed.
Jai was struggling to catch his breath. But he got himself to the bathroom, breathing through the pain. His stomach cramped making him flinch, but he was going to keep calm and not overreact yet. The book told him he had time before he had to go to the hospital. Plus his water hadn’t broken yet.
The room was still dark, but the bathroom light and closet light illuminated his path. He glanced at the clock which showed it was not quite two in the morning. He walked to the bathroom and got in the shower, he figured if the babies were coming there was no reason for him to go to the hospital looking a mess and feeling all grimy. He rushed through his shower and as he got out, he inhaled sharply as the pain hit. He breathed through it and then went to his side of the walk-in, putting on the first pair of sweats he found, and a t-shirt from Nickolas’ side of the closet.
The pain subsided a little and he walked to the bed to wake his alpha.
“Nickolas,” Jai said, tapping him on the shoulder, “Babe, you need to wake up. I think it’s time to go meet our babies.”
His alpha shot out of bed at that, his face as pale as milk, which shouldn’t have been possible with his skin tone. “Okay, okay. I’m ready for this. I’m all prepared for this. Breathe, babe, all you have to do is breathe.”
Jai snorted, “I am breathing, love. I think it’s you who needs to take a breath though.” Jai said, on a laugh that turned into a long moan.
His alpha blushed, but at the sound of Jai’s pain, flew into gear. Nickolas was already dressed, so he picked Jai up and started running out of the room. Barefoot and all. Since the contraction had passed, Jai said, “Babe, shoes, and the baby bag, and my bag. Put me down. I can walk, you go get all the stuff.”
“Yes. Stuff, I’ll go get the stuff,” Nickolas said, putting Jai back on his feet gently.
Jai put his slides on, not bothering to look for proper shoes. Not that anything else was super comfortable with his feet as swollen as they were. He left his alpha in the room and started making his way down the stairs, slowly.
He got to the bottom to find their housekeeper, Jean, standing there waiting for him, “What on earth are you doing up this late?” Jai asked as he waddled to the nearest chair.
“I had a feeling,” Jean said, walking over to where he was, then asked, “How far apart are the contractions?”
“I’m not sure, I haven’t been counting. But not too far apart.” Jai said as he leaned back in the chair. Before he could settle, he saw his usually composed alpha come down the stairs holding his small carry-ons, the two bags he’d packed for the babies and shoes in his hands, not on his feet.
He walked out of the house, murmuring to himself, only the gods knew what. “Well, I guess that’s my cue to follow.” Jai said, “Could you please call Robert, I don’t think Nic is in any state to drive.”
“He’s already outside and waiting with the new SUV that has the car seats installed,” Jean said, “Come on, let’s get you out to that alpha of yours.”
Jai got out of the chair with Jean’s help, and waddled to the door, nearly colliding with his alpha.
“What are you doing on your feet?” Nicholas asked, scooping Jai into his arms. “I was on my way to get you, you have to stay off your feet.”
Jai snorted, still staying calm, which was ironic. The more frazzled Nickolas was, the calmer he became. Jai was totally going to rock the whole childbirth thing.
Nickolas was a complete mess, but thankfully between Jean and Robert, Jai was settled into the car and they were soon on their way.
“Oh my God, I forgot my wallet. How are we going to get the insurance cards? We need to go back.” Nickolas said, a frantic note in his voice.
“Babe. Babe. Look at me. Focus, okay?” Jai would have laughed if he wasn’t so uncomfortable. “The insurance information is in my suitcase. Plus, we booked the room ahead of time and we are already registered, okay.”
“Okay. Okay. I can do this – we can do this. How are you feeling?” Nickolas asked, but Jai didn’t miss the edge of panic in his eyes.
“Babe, I’m fine, the pain is bad... no, not that bad really. And we’re still waiting for my water to break. So we have plenty of time.”
Robert got them to the hospital in record time, not that the one Jai was using was far from their home. They pulled up to the entrance and Jai opened the door to let himself out, but before he could struggle out of his seat, his alpha had already run around to his side to help him out – which he had to admit he was thankful for.
“I got you, babe,” Nickolas said, helping Jai down from the SUV.
“I know, babe,” Jai said, smiling up at his alpha. Right there and then his sweats were saturated by a sudden gush of amniotic fluid. “Oh my gods, I think my water just broke, or I peed my pants,” Jai said before the worst pain he had felt so far took over his body, making him tighten his grip on his alpha’s arm and moan loudly.
“Well, looks like that baby had excellent timing,” a nurse said, coming out of the emergency room with a wheelchair.
