Nickolas

Nickolas’ heart squeezed in his chest as he sat down and watched Jai sleeping. He ran his eyes over Jai’s skin, and couldn’t help but take in the bluish grey shadows beneath his eyes and how fragile he looked in sleep. Nickolas could see that Jai had lost weight, and with what he knew, that he was pregnant – pregnant – Nickolas thought in awe, his omega waspregnant.

He wasn’t about to think about himself in this situation, and he couldn’t help but see the depth of his fuck up. His omega was pregnant, but hadn’t even reached out for his help. His omega had clearly been suffering through his pregnancy and hestillhadn’t reached out.

More than anything, that made it clear to him just how much he needed to make up for. When he’d thought he might never find Jai again, Nickolas had been walking around with a sense of numbness he couldn’t shake. It was like his body had shut down when he thought he would never locate the omega.

He stroked a finger down Jai’s cheek, just basking in being near him. Thanking all the gods that Jai was here, and that he’d found him.

“I swear to the gods. I will make it up to you.” Nickolas said to a sleeping Jai.

“You had better,” Nickolas heard someone say, and looked up.

He stood, “I’m guessing you’re the one who called… Jai’s aunt.” Nickolas said, his arm stretched out for a handshake, which the lady ignored.

“I am. And I’m still not sure I did the right thing.”

“You did. I promise, you did.” Nickolas said, “I fucked up… I mean messed up, I know that, but I swear, if he gives me a chance... Iwillmake it up to him and never hurt him the same way again.”

“You know, when he showed up he was devastated. He thought he was hiding it, but I heard him crying in his room… because of you… for you… So, if you are still…” she paused, “otherwise encumbered, I suggest you leave before he gets used to you being here and starts depending on you.Alpha.”

Nickolas had never heard alpha sound so much like a four letter word. He should have been affronted from being spoken to that way, but he couldn’t be upset at someone so hugely protective of Jai. He was happy knowing Jai hadn’t been alone this whole time.

Nickolas decided to speak plainly since he figured the lady in front of him was probably the only person Jai called family, “If you mean have I ended my engagement, the answer is yes, I have. I did before Jai left, but I never got a chance to tell him. From the moment I met him, whether I knew it or not, that arrangement was over. Because there was no way I was walking away from Jai. I’m just sorry that he found out about it the way he did, and I caused him so much pain.” Nickolas said sincerely.

Jai’s aunt looked him up and down, then stared into his eyes for a beat before stretching her hand out, “Betty,” she said, finally introducing herself.

“Nickolas,” he replied, breathing out a relieved breath, that he didn’t even know he was holding.

“You’re still here,”Jai commented when he woke up the next morning.

“I told you I wanted to stay,” Nickolas replied, taking in Jai’s face and not liking how tired he still looked. “Did you really think I would leave?”

Jai shrugged. Not answering the question.

“I hope that’s a joke.” Nickolas said, looking at Jai, “But it’s not a joke, is it? You don’t trust me at all.”

Jai shrugged, but remained stubbornly silent. Not that he had to speak. Nicholas could hear him loud and clear. Where Jai was concerned, Nickolas lacked all credibility.

Nickolas walked over to the window, his broad shoulders radiating his tension, he looked back at Jai. “I know I fucked up, but did I deserve you disappearing? Not even a word, Jai. I was worried sick, thinking the worst. You could have at least let me know you were okay.”

Jai looked at Nickolas with those huge green eyes, lips quivering like he was about to cry, “I just…” his voice cut off as he buried his face in his hands, sobbing.

“Fuck,” Nickolas said, in a low tone striding over to Jai’s side. “I’m sorry Jai. Please, I didn’t mean to upset you, baby. Don’t cry,” Nickolas pleaded.

Jai looked up at him, those green eyes shining like emeralds with the tears glistening, “I was going to call.” Jai said in a quivering tone, “But every time I thought about it, I just couldn’t,” Jai looked at Nickolas with eyes full of hurt.

“I know. I know. It’s okay, we don’t have to talk about this right now.” Nickolas said, trying to settle Jai, as he could see his heart rate climbing from the monitor he was attached to. “Just… please Jai, don’t run away from me again. I was worried sick, and I had people looking everywhere for you.”

“You looked for me?” Jai asked in confusion.

“Of course I did, baby, why wouldn’t I?” Nickolas used the pad of his thumb to wipe a tear away from Jai’s cheek.

“Well, you’re engaged,” Jai said, in a defeated tone. Nickolas realized he would take angry Jai over defeated Jai any day. There was no light in his eyes, no spark that Nickolas had come to love.
