Nickolas

Nickolas couldn't believe he’d given in and actually agreed to an arranged marriage. It was his engagement party and he was surrounded by celebrity guests and fawning relatives. He just wanted to rip his skin off with how claustrophobic he was feeling. He felt like a trained monkey in a circus. He looked around for one of the few people in the room he actually wanted there. His younger brother Graham. He walked over to where Graham stood back from the crowd, observing, as he was known to do.

His brother was known for his blunt and forthright opinion that to some came off as rude. But Nickolas loved him for it. Granted, he loved him because they were brothers, but it also had a lot to do with the fact that growing up stupid rich, you learned quickly that most people wanted something from you. Because of that, he had a handful of friends and his brother. That was it when it came to his inner circle. Graham had been out of the country working at their European office for the past few years, so he hadn’t had the chance to properly meet Nickolas’ fiancé until this week, and Nickolas was dying to hear what his brother thought of the omega who had been picked out for him.

As someone born into wealth Nickolas valued the rarity that was honesty and couldn’t wait to hear what his younger brother had to say about his soon to be groom. Graham was as small in stature as Nickolas was tall, but with the same dark eyes and tan skin that they’d gotten from their Italian great-grandparents who’d come to America for a better life for their family. “Asa is a very beautiful young man. Every alpha here must envy you.”

He looked at his brother with raised eyebrows, acknowledging the comment, but asking for the unspoken thoughts he saw lurking in Graham’s eyes. “Fine. You want me to say it. What kind of carrier and father will he make for your children?”

Nickolas made no outward reactions to the comment, because for one he knew that neither he nor Asa was quite at the having children stage yet. He hadn’t really thought of his fiancé in terms of being a parent if he was being honest. Sure, in a few years they would have a child. But Nickolas wasn’t as hung up on it as most Alphas. He wasn’t an only child, he had a sister who’d gotten married and had kids. And there was Graham too. Nickolas wasn’t focused on reproducing. He knew it wasn’t the way of an alpha according to society, but he honestly didn’t care.

“What? You think that it doesn’t matter, Nic? You think I’m being a worrier, as usual, don’t you?” His omega brother asked, with a hint of censure. “But that omega is so self-absorbed, he would drown in the ocean looking at his own reflection.”

Nickolas ground his teeth together, he wasn’t accustomed to criticism even from his beloved brother. It didn’t help that at the moment his omega was half drunk and making a spectacle of himself. The young man had yet to meet a mirror or camera he couldn’t pose for. Then again, when one was told they were stunning from the moment of their birth, it led to vanity, which Asa had in spades.

Blessed with eyes so clear, the oceans of the Caribbean paled in comparison, and white-blond hair, Asa, with his stunning beauty, attracted notice from the moment he was old enough. He was an heir to a vast real estate fortune himself and the only child of seriously indulgent parents. Asa had been doted on from birth. Nickolas could see how his brother, an omega himself, couldn’t understand what Nickolas saw in Asa. No two omegas could have less in common if they tried. Graham had gone the education route, choosing to get his business degree, then an MBA. He then decided to go work in Europe, outside the meddling influence of their parents who would have tried to marry him off to a suitable alpha. He’d had Nickolas’ full support, which their parents still hadn’t forgiven him for. In a lot of ways their parents were modern, but when it came to alpha and omega roles, they had some old world beliefs that they held onto. Like alphas being alphas, and omegas marrying alphas and popping out babies, to continue the family line, or merge two moneyed families.

Graham’s refusal to conform to the traditional standards of their parents, and his blunt tongue, made him somewhat of an embarrassment to them. But there had always been a special bond between Graham and Nickolas, formed unexpectedly when Graham had fallen ill for a time when they were kids. He’d been there by his side from start to finish, while their jet-setting parents had simply sent a card or flowers here and there.

“You know if you suddenly lost all your money tomorrow, Asa would ditch you so quick, he’d leave skid marks on his way out.” His brother said drily. “He would be gone so fast, even you with your daily runs wouldn’t be able to catch him.”

Nickolas laughed at the picture his brother painted. But if for some reason he lost his personal and family fortunes, Asa would be more of a problem than any kind of help. He would whine so much Nickolas would have to seek funds to pay for the pleasure of seeing him out of his life. He was a child born to a certain lifestyle and expected to live in the manner to which he was accustomed. Did his brother truly believe that they could actually end up with people who didn’t see them as bank accounts first? As well off as Asa’s family was, it didn’t compare to the wealth his own family had amassed for generations. And he was sure Asa’s family had picked Nickolas as his alpha to further elevate their status.

Nickolas knew it should sting that his groom saw him as an even bigger meal ticket, but honestly, it was fine with him. Everyone knew where they stood. And he knew that he could occupy the omega with pretty baubles while he lived his life, however, he saw fit. “Thanks for the input brother, but trust me, I’m going in with my eyes open.”

Nickolas took a look around, spotting his family’s head of security. He pointed towards the balcony letting the man know where he would be, before slipping out for some peace and quiet. He enjoyed the privacy while taking in the fresh air. He couldn’t understand why his brother’s words had upset him, even though he hadn’t let on.

He was going to marry Asa Rutherford—there were no questions about it. People saw them together and thought“golden couple.”Asa had the perfect pedigree and they belonged to the same exclusive world of ridiculous wealth. They had both set the rules and Asa wouldn’t bother Nickolas as he pursued whatever means of distractions he felt like. Asa would never make noise at whatever extra-curricular activities he pursued, and they both knew that there was no chance in hell of a divorce.

It wouldn’t be cheating if both parties were on the same page. Because, as he had discovered, the most stunning omega in the world didn’t seem to have anything to offer. Not in bed or out of it.

“Please don’t get me sweaty.” That was his favorite sentence. “I really need to get to sleep, I’m tired. Maybe another night? Can we just like get it over with?”

Like being with Nickolas was some sort of chore.

Asa was never going to curl his toes in bed. There was no fire or enthusiasm. His lack of passion would have been a deal-breaker if the omega hadn’t already made it clear that he was okay with Nickolas finding his pleasure elsewhere. He knew it seemed cold-blooded to most, but Nickolas would prefer someone that knew the status-quo. He’d spent his early twenties, in search of the so-called love match or bond that people talked about. But had yet to find it. So he’d stopped the childish dreaming and agreed to do his duty for his family.

Asa being his husband wouldn’t impact his daily life one way or another. He had gotten accustomed to doing exactly what he wanted and marriage wouldn’t change that. Asa would be neither clingy nor have unrealistic expectations of Nickolas. And since Asa didn’t seem to like Nickolas’ attention, Nickolas wouldn’t demand it. Sure Nickolas would love a marriage that had all the love, trust, and fidelity. But since that was not the case he would settle for what he could get.

Plus, Nickolas knew he was a workaholic, so a husband who didn’t care one way or another where he was, would certainly take away from all the “where are you” phone calls. Asa would be too occupied, spending his money on all the designer clothes and spa vacations he could fit in, to care about where his husband was.

Once he rejoined the party, Asa made his way to Nickolas’ side, with cameras along for the ride of course, because what was life if it wasn’t some big photo-op? Nickolas made sure to hide his impatience and irritation. Even though he hated the publicity, he knew what he’d signed up for this evening.

Taking his lack of objection as support, Asa started regaling him with tales of people he couldn’t care less about, and what they were wearing, then he seemed to notice Graham hiding out in his corner still, “He must be such a disappointment of an omega to your parents. Look at the way he came dressed for the party.” Asa said with a giggle.

Nickolas glanced across the room and his eyes settled on his younger brother, who was dressed in gray pants and a black shirt, that Nickolas took no issue with. “What’s wrong with what he has on?” Nickolas enquired, a hint of anger creeping into his voice. But it seemed the omega missed the warning.

“Oh My God. Could he be any more boring? Like his outfit is dreadful. It’s not even last season. I think it’s off the rack.” Asa whispered the last part like just saying it was a sin.

Graham wasn’t one for society parties, so he was rarely seen by this crowd, but Nickolas wasn’t about to have his brother insulted by anyone. Not even the omega he was about to marry.

“Careful,” Nickolas warned again, but either Asa was too wasted to note the warning, or just didn’t care. He carried on speaking.

“He actually asked me where I worked.Hello!” Asa said, rolling his eyes, like Graham posing that question to him was supremely stupid on his part. The contempt in his tone showed just how spoilt he truly was. “Someone should have told him he doesn’t fit in here. Gosh, so embarrassing for your family. I do hope he’s in the back or something for the wedding. Or maybe he’ll just go back to England and not make it back.”

“If my brother doesn’t make it, believe me, I won’t either,” Nickolas said, not batting an eye.

Nickolas watched as Asa tried to process his statement. Asa must have seen how serious Nickolas was because he laughed like he’d been making a joke. “Oh my God. You’re so serious. I was just joking. Like, totally, just joking. Don’t mind me, I’ve had way too much to drink.” Asa said, trying to pretend he hadn’t been serious. But Nickolas saw right through him.

“That’s my brother. He’s my family. You’ll do well to remember that.” Nickolas said, removing the hand Asa had placed on his arm and taking a step back. Nickolas wasn’t sure what he was feeling, but he knew he had to get out of there before he said the first thing on his mind, and right now, it was that the wedding was off.
