JASON
The threat is gone for now.
I read the text over again for the tenth time, but I hesitated to believe it. Striding into the conference room, I nodded to Lock as I took my seat and waited for the rest of the team to arrive. Eva would be joining us for this meeting, and I hesitated to tell her what I already knew.
She was the last to arrive and looked just as wary as the rest of us. But she took her seat beside Lock and nodded that she was ready.
Lock stood and looked at each of us…Asher, Jack, Johnny, Eva, and Rae. “Jason received a message earlier today from Cash. The threat is gone for now. I can only assume he’ll stay in touch as he can, but if not, stay on your toes and don’t go anywhere alone. We have no idea if any blowback will land on us.”
“So, you’re saying it’s safe to head home, but not to trust anyone,” Asher snorted. “That’s great.”
“You’re always welcome to stay,” Lock suggested.
He shook his head. “I have a different life now. Holly is pregnant. I can’t stay around here and get more mixed up with this shit.”
“We understand, but you always have a place here if you need it.”
“I appreciate that.”
Lock nodded and moved on. “As for the rest of you…Knight is out of the picture for now. With his injuries, there’s no way he can assist Cash in any capacity.”
“Do we know what happened yet?” Eva asked. “Where was Cash and how does he factor into everything?”
I winced at her question, but Izzy’s words from last night came back to me. She deserved to know the truth. “Cash was there,” I spoke up.
Her head whipped in my direction and shock crossed her face. “What?”
The air turned stifled as we let that sink in. “We saw him when we went after Knight. He was there with Michael.”
“But he didn’t stay with him?” Eva asked. “Why would he do that?”
“Maybe he couldn’t,” I answered. “With everyone else there…”
Eva shoved back from her chair, her eyes frantic as she looked at each of us. “No, he wouldn’t do that. He wouldn’t just walk away while his brother was bleeding out on the ground.”
“He did.”
I glanced toward the door where Hunter stood in the shadows. Slowly, he made his way inside, stopping just short of the table.
“What are you talking about?” Lock asked.
“Knight told me that Cash shot him in cold blood. Cash wanted in, and the price was to kill his brother.”
Eva stood, shaking her head at him. “After he had to shoot Rafe? There’s no way he would do that!”
“It came right from the horse’s mouth,” Hunter snapped. “He had a choice and he pulled the trigger. Getting his revenge was more important than Knight’s life.”
But he’d called us. He needed Knight to stay dead. Was that because he really wanted him dead or because it would kill his plans if they found out Knight didn’t actually die?
“There’s one other problem we have.”
“Fuck. Another one?” Lock sighed.
“It’s a fucking big one, so you’d better be ready to handle it.”
“What is it?”
Hunter raised his chin slightly, lending an air of danger to the conversation. “When he told Fox, the guy shot Knight up with sedatives. You know how he gets.”
“We’ll rein him in.”
He shook his head. “He’s gone. Fox is gone.”
