Page 97 of Chasing Savannah
“Is it about my car?”
Derrick snorted. Carlos hid a smile. He knew it was only a matter of time before she brought it back up.
“If you’re serious about giving this a chance you’re going to have to start attending prowl meetings.”
She groaned and lay her head on his shoulder.
“It needs to happen soon, Savannah.” Derrick gently admonished.
“The next meeting is tomorrow night?”
Carlos hummed in agreement.
“Are we ready for this, for the scrutiny that will come with it?” She grabbed his cheeks and looked him in the eye.
“I have nothing to hide, sweetheart.” He whispered.
She turned and looked at Derrick. He crossed his arms over his chest. “The sooner they understand that we’re not giving you up, the better.”
She sighed and stood. She took her coffee cup and dumped the contents in the sink, turning on the water. He looked at his Beta. Derrick shrugged. They sat quiet while she washed the mug, and waited. The only noise in the apartment came from whatever movie the kids were watching.
She turned and nodded at them. “I’ll attend tomorrow night.”
Derrick stood and gathered her in his arms. Carlos sat back in his chair and sipped at his coffee while his mates whispered to each other.
“One other thing.”
Savannah tensed in Derrick’s arm before peeking around his back.
“We were thinking that with this threat, we’d like you to be trained by an enforcer.”
She frowned and looked between them. “Seriously?”
Derrick nodded. “It would make us feel better to know you can defend yourself.”
“What makes the two of you think I can’t defend myself?” The hot sting of her anger whipped through the room.
Carlos didn’t have an answer to that, so he stayed silent.
“We can talk about it later.” Derrick said hastily.
She pushed out of his arms. “I’m putting the kids to bed.”
Derrick raised his eyebrows as she left the kitchen. “What did we say?”
He shrugged.
Hours later as he stood under the water, he was still confused. Damned if he understood their mate. He came out of the shower and Savannah was sitting in the middle of the bed, her hair tied, and the spaghetti strap of her silk tank top sliding down her arm. His mouth watered.
She held up her hand. “We’re still getting to know each other, so we’re going to butt heads, I understand that. But, you don’t know me well enough to know what’s ‘best for me’, understand?”
What could he say to that?
Derrick came into the room, a towel around his waist. “What’s up?”
Carlos crossed his arms over his chest. “Our mate was just telling me that I don’t know enough about her to make decisions for her. Am I taking that right?”
She lifted her chin and looked at the both of them. “Right.”
“Is this about what we said in the kitchen?” Derrick sat on the edge of the mattress.
She nodded. “Instead of asking me, the two of you made assumptions about what I did or didn’t know. I dealt with that in my marriage, I’m not dealing with it again.”
Carlos studied her, and realized how serious she was. He nodded. “That’s fair. I’m sorry.”
Her eyes widened in surprise. He walked to her, crawling on the bed until he’d pinned her. “I need you to quit looking surprised when I apologize. It makes me feel like an ass.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down. “Deal.”
