Page 90 of Chasing Savannah
Tonight was the first time the two prowls had worked together without too much static. The enforcers from the Tampa prowl were trying to guide his enforcers but it was slow going. They were not working together as seamlessly as he’d wanted. The ladies in the Tampa prowl were pushing back on the Jersey prowl’s army training, and his men were unused to breaking protocol to hunt and fight the ways in which the Tampa prowl were accustomed. He needed to find a way for the prowl to merge their methods.
His panther swiped at his insides, fur growing along his arms and receding as he and animal fought. Had he not been with Savannah, he would’ve chased the trespassers down himself. Just for the release of his animal. He should’ve been in bed with his mates, instead he was in his office brooding.
He sighed and got up, leaving the office. He punched the button for the top floor, as he got into the elevator, entering his code. He didn’t want to go back to his apartment. Not yet.
Silence wrapped around him as he stepped from the elevator into the penthouse. Fresh paint scented the space, along with saw dust and various other construction smells. They’d finally finished and now the place sat empty, waiting on Savannah to make it her own. Movement along the floor to ceiling windows caught his eye. His Beta shuffled, staring out into the skyline, then went still, nearly disappearing into the shadow.
He walked over to him. Derrick turned around and rubbed his cheek against Carlos’ cheek.
“I know, Beta.”
Derrick didn’t have to say anything. He knew what his best friend wanted. His cat was equally restless with Savannah being out from under them.
“We promised her we’d take it slow,” Derrick commented.
“You trying to convince me, or yourself?”
Derrick sighed. “I want our mate.”
Carlos stood at the window next to him and shoved his hands into his pants pockets. “The bond is stronger, I don’t understand why she’s fighting it so hard.”
“I know, I feel it. I don’t know that I’ll be able to sleep with her again without biting her.” Derrick said quietly.
He chuckled, though the sound held no amusement. “We can only wait.”
Derrick nodded. “I found out what the old seer told her.”
He tensed.
“She told Savannah if she became Fela, the prowl would be sterile, and torn apart.”
He hissed and whipped his head to his best friend. Anger tore through him and his claws exploded from his hands, ripping through his pants. “You’re serious?”
“I talked to Joelle after our meeting the other day. She says it’s not true, but it explains why Savannah’s fighting us so hard.”
“I would give up the prowl to have her. It means nothing without Savannah.”
Derrick sighed. “I agree, Felix.”
Carlos thought about the threat that ended their date early. “Who the fuck is attacking our prowl, Beta?”
“We’ve met with all the prowls surrounding us. Unless they’re expert liars, they’re not gunning for our territory. If anything, Brielle and Brianne were right. They are scared shitless of this prowl.” Derrick crossed his arms over his chest.
Carlos shrugged, frustration burning his chest. His phone started ringing and he looked down. It was their mate. He tensed and glanced at Derrick. He put it on speaker phone.
“What’s wrong?” His cat went on alert.
“Nothing, God, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She rushed to reassure him.
Anticipation tightened his shoulders. “Did you need something, Savi?”
“My mates.” She said softly.
He gripped the phone and looked into his Beta’s eyes. Derrick’s hands were clenched at his sides, his eyes flickering in the dim light as he battled his panther.
“I just left your house. What’s changed?”
“I don’t like being separated from you. As soon as you left, I just…I can’t sleep,” she whispered.
