Page 17 of Chasing Savannah
It was no small ask and Derrick saw first the surprise, then respect that crossed both the Alpha and his Beta before they covered it. He breathed easier.
“It says a lot of a man who knows when he needs help. You are as Theo presented. That makes me more inclined to believe the promises he’s given to us.”
“I know your mate wants to remain in the house she loves. I have no problem with that, and would frankly love having you here as Elders.” Carlos hastened to reassure them all.
Carlos had no need to banish the Felix and his family off the prowl land. He, Derrick and Theo had spoken for long hours before they even started the process. Having a more experienced alpha would go a long way to making their changeover easier on all involved. Showing the old prowl that Carlos respected their Alpha and took council from him would go a long way to soothing ruffled feathers.
“It would be my honor. Besides, the women here take a little bit of finessing. You’ll need help there, if you’re to completely win them over.” Jeremiah laid a hand over his heart.
The women at his back scoffed.
“You won’t get any push back from the males, but the alpha gene runs true through the women in this family.” Harper advised with a smile.
“Why haven’t either of them stepped up to run the prowl?” Carlos asked.
Derrick was genuinely curious. The power emanating from the women at his back packed heat and strength.
“They’ve kept outside prowls from encroaching, and have brokered, both peace and territory from those north of us. Make no mistake, they could if they had a mind to. But at the end of the day, the prowls in this area are old-fashioned.” Jeremiah supplied.
“Without a male leading, they would get pushback from the council on everything. As it is, council meetings take way longer than they should.” Harper groused.
The old man got a calculating gleam to his eye. “Not for nothing, but marrying into this family would carry a lot of weight.”
Carlos smiled. “I’ve met our mate.”
Just hearing Carlos say it had his panther rolling through his body. He was anxious to begin pursuit of Savannah.
“Our, a Tribond?” Jeremiah narrowed his eyes.
“Yes. It’s rare where we come from so, I feel especially blessed.” Carlos laid a hand on Derrick’s shoulder.
“Not so much for this prowl.” Harper sat back in the chair in which he sat, a satisfied smile on his face.
They didn’t have to say anymore. Since they were in a Tribond, then chances are, Savannah was indirectly tied to the prowl. He went back over the little bit of information she’d given them weeks ago at Theo’s house. Interesting.
“We have three in our prowl alone.” Jeremiah stated.
Now that would explain how an aging alpha with a prowl full of women was able to keep hold of the amount of territory they ran.
“That’s a lot of power.”
A smile ghosted across the Alpha’s lips. “Indeed it is. Who is your mate, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“We haven’t, I haven’t made even the first move. I wanted this to be done before I approached her,” Carlos explained.
“Sensible,” Jeremiah murmured. “And another point in your favor.”
“Her name is Savannah.” Derrick offered.
“Landry,” Theo filled in.
Jeremiah and his Beta shared a look. One of the women behind them cleared their throat.
“Do you know her?” Carlos asked.
He nodded. “If you’re talking about the same Savannah, then yes, I do.” He smiled and stood, ending the meeting. “I’ll give you a few days to get settled, but you’ll want to have the ceremony to change over the prowl soon. I want no indication of power changing hands until it’s done. I plan to spend my retirement here, in peace with my mates, and my fields.”
He waved his hands to get them to stand and escorted them to the door. “Come by tomorrow. I can show you around, let you meet the enforcers and others in the hierarchy.”
