Page 119 of Chasing Savannah
Chapter 38
Her head was pounding. Fear, anger and helplessness swirled in her belly until she was nauseous. Her son had only been missing for two hours and yet it felt like a year had passed. She sat, clutching her sister in law, watching all the activity around them. Laura hadn’t said a word since they’d arrived at the school. She well understood the woman’s shock.
“They’ll find them, I know it.” Laura whispered.
Savannah didn’t answer, the reassurance seemed more for Laura than for her. She rubbed Laura’s back. Carlos was barking orders in the phone. He had been since they left the school. People were coming in and out of the penthouse and she felt like she should be doing something to help, she just didn’t know what…so she stared into nothing. Ella was currently with her Aunt Yasmeen downstairs and she had nothing to do.
She took a deep breath and fought to shake off some of the fear currently drowning her. She was first and foremost a Watson. And Watsons were nothing if not stubborn. She would not freeze while her son was out there with God knows who. She did what she normally did when she needed help. She called her cousins. Charlotte answered on the first ring.
“We’re almost there, Savi. I just heard.”
A shudder of relief shook her body. “Thank you.” She hung up and stood.
She walked over to her mate. She pulled the phone from him. “Charlotte is the only one of your enforcers who’s gotten close to finding this prowl. She’s on her way.”
Carlos watched, or rather to say his panther did. It stared from her mate’s eyes, watchful, ready for vengeance. She rubbed her head under his chin and a rumble shook his chest.
The elevator dinged and her grandparents marched into their living room.
“What’s this I hear about Antoinette?” Jeremiah demanded.
Her heart clenched, and her hands trembled as she stepped back from her mate. “What’s he talking about?”
Carlos rubbed a hand down his face. “I was going to tell you.”
“Well tell me now!” She took another step back.
Derrick came up behind her and rested his hands on her shoulders. She shook off his touch.
“Savi, we literally just found out last night.” Carlos told.
“So it’s true then. Antoinette is behind the attacks on our prowl?” Jeremiah asked.
“No.” She gasped.
Her aunt’s prophecies spiraled through her mind. Every prediction about her costing the prowl, playing in detail. She was the cause of this. Because she was stubborn, her son had been taken. She should’ve listened, heeded the warnings.
But temptation had been too much.
“Don’t, Savi.” Derrick reached for her.
She back away. “It’s my fault.”
“No, that’s not…” Carlos growled as his phone rang.
The elevator dinged again, this time Charlotte and Naomi came in. She looked at her cousins and shook her head.
“It’s still going to come true.” She whispered.
Naomi rushed to her side and enfolded her. Tears escaped, streaming down her face as the consequences of her actions flooded her.
“He’s gone and everything that bitch said is going to come true.” She sobbed onto Naomi’s shoulder.
Naomi said nothing, simply guided her upstairs and into the bedroom she shared with her mates. She stopped at the door. Their combined scents dominated her senses, something she’d taken comfort in just that morning before she left. Now? Now it was a slap in the face, a reminder of what she’d chosen over her son’s safety. Naomi pushed her further inside before shutting the door, allowing them privacy.
“Nothing will happen to Jamie, Savi. They won’t let it.” Naomi brushed a hand over her hair.
“It doesn’t matter, because when this is all done, I will lose them.” Her knees weakened and she buckled.
