Page 68 of Chasing Savannah
“She told us we would be the downfall of the prowl.” Naomi hiccupped.
Savannah pulled her hand back and gripped her cup. “And when that didn’t stop us from coming to meetings, she made sure someone challenged us every time we stepped foot on prowl land. She said letting latents into the hierarchy would make the prowl sterile, and she’d do everything in her power to stop it from happening.”
“That’s…” Joelle covered her mouth and a tear spilled over. “None of that is true.”
“Oh my God.” Charlotte gasped.
Joelle took several deep breaths. “I’d known she was twisting my prophecies to fit her ambitions, but I never imagined...” She turned to Naomi, and put a hand on her back. “Same with you?”
Naomi nodded. “We left immediately. What twelve year old wants to hear that they’ll bring down their prowl and their family will suffer?”
“Lord above.” Joelle whispered. She got up from the chair and left the room. She walked into the living room and looked out the window.
Savannah stood and went to her cousins. They all embraced. “Did you know why Aunt Toni had been expelled?” She asked Charlotte.
Charlotte had tears in her eyes. “I swear I didn’t. I just knew she was gone. I believed what you guys did, that your staying would endanger us all.”
“That bitch,” Naomi hissed.
“I hate her.” Savannah whispered, grief and anger taking turns, making her both feverish and sick to her stomach. Power raised in her and she didn’t know what to do or think about it.
Joelle turned back to them and walked back, wiping her hands along her jeans. “Sorry is not enough, not for what I imagined you’ve felt all these years. I should’ve insisted on seeing you when Antoinette left. Your grandparents were pretty adamant that saying something to you would make it worst. Visions I had after, confirmed it, so I let it go on all these years.”
Savannah retook her seat.
“It’s not much but everything that has happened, has led you both to this point. You’re so very important to the prowl.” Joelle gripped the edge of the island.
Savi lifted her chin. “What does that mean?”
Joelle turned her eyes to her and took deep breaths. “You’re going to be Alpha female and Naomi the Zeta.”
“We haven’t had a Zeta in all the time I’ve been in the pride hierarchy,” Charlotte’s face was bunched in confusion. “What does that mean, what does a Zeta do?”
“I don’t have any power.” Naomi insisted.
“Yet,” Joelle said. “Zetas stabilize a prowl. Their power lies in their ability to drain any toxic emotions. The connection in a prowl goes through the Felix, he connects us together, a Zeta boosts those connections, and brings us all closer together.”
Naomi gave Savannah a stunned look. She could only shrug. She was busy digesting that she would be alpha female.
“I’m latent.” she said aloud.
Joelle shrugged and turned her attention back to Savannah. “I told your aunt that you would be Fela. I saw it from the first moment I saw you.”
“What?” She blinked in surprise. How young was she when Joelle first saw her?
“At the time, I was still learning to control my visions, to see them through to completion, so I didn’t have the full scope. Antoinette said that having a latent alpha female would tear the prowl apart. I didn’t know any better.” She shrugged again. “You’ll be Alpha female and your Tribond will bring untold power to this prowl. From the visions I’ve been having, your mates won’t have it any other way.”
“Did they put you up to this?” She whispered. “Why haven’t you told me this before?”
“I swear they didn’t, but we both know you wouldn't have believed me had I just shown up. The Felix asked me to see you and read you, but he didn’t put me ‘up’ to anything. When you asked Charlotte to meet with me, I knew the time was right. All the visions I’ve been having lately have warned me that it was time to tell you.”
“I’m latent,” she repeated.
“Yes, but you are powerful, or will be once your mates unlock it. You’re already stronger than the last time I saw you.”
The kitchen went silent as they all took in the seer’s words.
“Did you tell our grandparents?” Naomi asked.
