"Wait, why is it so big if it's newborn?" I asked.
"No, the mama bear's probably watching over the newborn in her den," Elijah said. "This is Teddy and he's a few years old."
"Damn, a few years old?" I said.
"I know right," Michael said. "He looks so chubby he could barely fit through that door. You're over feeding them, Elijah. We might have to roll him out the door if you feed him some more."
Elijah giggled. "That's just how they get when they're all ready to hibernate. They eat as much as they can and then use that energy for the next six months."
When Teddy saw Elijah, he charged towards us and the floorboards creaked under his weight.
Daddy and Nick almost screamed and instinctively shielded me with their bodies.
"I can't see." I kicked my limbs around and pushed my head out from between their bodies.
When Michael waddled up to Teddy with extended hands as he sucked on his binky, Princess began barking her head off at the bear. When Michael didn't stop, Princess grabbed him by the jammies and tried pulling him away with all her might.
"All animals are supposed to be friends, Princess," Michael scolded. "You don't want Teddy to think you're rude, now do you? Teddy's known me for months now. He just wants to make friends, like all the other wild animals."
Daddy and Nick relaxed once they saw that the bear couldn't fit through the bedroom door and had to wait outside. Elijah and Michael walked up to Teddy and offered him their hands, which he then proceeded to sniff and lick.
When I insisted, Nick handed me a carrot off the floor. I still wasn't allowed to leave Daddy's arms and Nick agreed. They worried too much.
"What do you think, Michael?" I asked. "Will he try to eat me if I step any closer? I do look quite pretty today. Maybe I look like a tasty snack to him."
"Impossible." Michael waved a hand in the air. "Teddy's the friendliest bear I know, not that I know many others. Besides, why would he want to eat us Littles when there’s a bunch of beefy-looking Daddies in the room."
Michael did have a point.
I stuck the carrot out and waved it at Teddy. Instead of taking the carrot, he sniffed my hand with his big snout. When he licked my hand, I giggled.
"He's ticking me, Daddy." I giggled again. "Just like you tickle me."
Nick had his arm on my shoulder, ready to pull me away the moment Teddy showed aggression, but soon everyone realized how friendly Teddy was.
We laughed and giggled as we took turns petting Teddy's head. The soft fur was unbelievably thick. It was a miracle considering there was no shampoo in the woods.
Soon Princess and Nico warmed up to the bear, sniffing him and chasing each other around him. When Teddy lay on the living room floor, we all sat around him and pet his belly. He was so huge I wasn't even sure he could feel anything. But he was purring like a cat so he seemed to be enjoying it.
When it was time for lunch, Teddy sat around on the floor and chewed on carrots, holding onto them between his paws like a human. We all watched in fascination when he fell asleep in the middle of the living room. He was having an afternoon nap and his snores were so loud half the forest could probably hear him.
When it was time for Teddy to leave in the evening, we all gathered outside. I got to see Teddy do the trick Elijah was so proud of teaching. The trick was waving him goodbye.
"Oh God, it's going to be hard six months." Elijah suddenly broke into tears and got down on all fours.
Before his Daddies could comfort him, Michael and I were by his side, rubbing his back in small circles.
It must've been hard to live in the woods for six months and then in the city for the rest of each year. He probably had to constantly adapt to the changes.
"It's alright," I said as Nico climbed into his lap to comfort him. "Six months are going to pass by in no time and you'll be back to living in the woods. You'll have us to keep you busy. We're gonna have so many playdates together, you'll get tired of us and ban us from coming over."
"Yeah," Michael added and wiped Elijah's tears. "We'll bring over Nico and Princess too, so you can tell them all the stories of how much fun you had hanging out with the bears."
It was so calm and peaceful outside, away from the noise of the bustling city. The only sounds were that of birds chirping and the branches swaying in the gentle breeze. Somehow, I could imagine myself living such a life. As long as I had Daddy and Nick by my side, I would gladly live out the rest of my life in the forest. Lately, I'd been including Nick in my idea of a happy life, and it felt like a sign from the universe to make him my Daddy.
We were allowed to explore outside but under Elijah's strict guidance. He knew the woods like the back of his hand, but even then he wasn't allowed to go out of the cabin's visibility. The dogs barked and chased each other around us.
While we were out for a walk, our Daddies were busy preparing snacks for us. Elijah was very sad so we had to return soon, but we decided to hang out at the pier by the lake behind the cabin. I was the first to sit on the edge of the pier and the others followed.
