Story: Whispered Sins
“Shhh!” I said. “You’re going to get us in trouble.”
“What is this? Middle school? Am I going to get sent to the principal?”
I put my hand over my mouth and stifled a laugh.
“I guess he already got you pregnant. What else could happen?” whispered Monica with a shrug.
“True.”
“Did he stay the night?”
I nodded as the teacher instructed us to get on all fours for the next position.
“But the next morning, he asked to borrow my clothes.”
“Wait… what?” asked Monica.
“He didn’t ask for a pair of heels,” I said. “He just didn’t want to wear his fancy suit.”
“Ah, makes sense.”
“Yeah, but I got the feeling he was trying to go incognito. Like he didn’t want to be seen with me.”
“Get out of your head, Heart. He’s into you.”
“You’re the writer. How is this going to turn out for me?” I asked as I arched my back like the teacher instructed.
“This is a classic bad boy turns good trope.”
“This isn’t a romance novel. This is my life.”
“Well, your life is certainly going to serve as inspiration for my next novel.”
I rolled my eyes at her as I arched my back and pressed my hands into the floor.
Monica seemed so sure, but this all felt too good to be true. This stuff didn’t really happen. Maybe it did in her literary world, but not in real life.
“So, tell me, is this how he got you pregnant?” whispered Monica.
I burst into laughter and the teacher shot us another warning look. Leave it to Monica to get us kicked out of a Lamaze class.
Chapter 26
Daniel
My phone buzzed on my desk as I wrapped up signing some documents for the London deal. Everything was in place to start on my newest product to launch, but the fine details were taking longer than I had expected. And the time difference was taking its toll on me. I yawned as I reached over and picked up my phone. It was Freddy calling.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hey, man. Are we still on for tonight at Royal 35?”
Confused, I opened my calendar on my laptop. Shit. There it was. Friday night. A dinner reservation with Freddy at 7 p.m. I was supposed to take Heart out tonight, and I had no intention of canceling. I hadn’t seen her all week. Without our usual morning drives from Brooklyn to Manhattan, I missed her.
“Aw, man. Freddy. I totally forgot. I’m double booked.”
“What could be more important than whiskey and a ribeye with your oldest friend?”
I hesitated. I hadn’t told Freddy about Heart yet.
