At first,I think I’ve misheard him, so I don’t move.

“You’re quite stubborn, aren’t you?” Alexander’s grip on my neck tightens, and a bubble of panic surfaces in my throat. I don’t want him to choke me again. “I said, get on your knees, sweetheart.”

There’s no mistaking him this time.

I’m icy all over, helplessness sinking to the pit of my stomach.

This corner of the lecture hall is so far from the door I doubt anyone would hear if I called for help, and if by some miracle I was able to free myself from Alexander’s grip, he would chase me down before I even made it outside.

Even if I made it out the door, what then?

He showed up and got rid of the professor without even breaking a sweat. I worry about what he’ll do if I upset him any further. Everything Tara said about him is true.

I sink to my knees, despair gripping my throat. He moves his hand to knot his fingers in my hair. Pain slices my scalp from his harsh grip, and I hate that my body reacts to it.

Everything is happening in slow motion; there’s no sound in the room.
