Page 93 of The Deception You Weave
"What the hell, Kane?" she snaps, jumping from the couch as if she intends to physically remove me from her dad's house.
Lowering my voice, I keep my eyes trained on her. "I told you not to come here."
"And I told you to fuck off."
My teeth grind to the point I wonder if I'm about to crack one.
"It's like you enjoy pissing me off, Princess," I growl, ignoring the fact that William Hunter's death glare is burning holes into my skull.
Her lips part, I'm sure to spit more abuse at me that's going to make me want to punish her, but it's not her voice that fills the space around us.
"You need to leave," William barks, sitting forward on the couch despite the fact he looks like he can barely fucking move.
"No problem, but I'm taking your daughter with me."
"Like fuck you are. I'm not some rag doll you get to drag around, Kane."
"You'll be whatever I want you to be when you defy me on purpose and put yourself in danger."
"She's not in danger," William spits.
Ripping my eyes from Letty, I turn my attention to her father.
"Are you sure about that?" He pales slightly, giving me the answer I need. "Exactly. You fucked-up, old man. She now knows the truth, which means she's in fucking danger."
"Victor wouldn't risk touching her."
An unamused chuckle falls from my lips.
"Victor doesn't give a shit about anyone. He'd wipe out his own flesh and blood if it benefited him. Gray hasn't been seen for fucking months. Do we see Victor walking around like he gives two shits about where his youngest son is or if he's still alive?"
"He nearly killed my daughter," William growls.
"Even more reason to protect this one, don't you think?" I ask, raising a brow.
His eyes hold mine for a beat longer, a silent warning within them. He doesn't want me anywhere near Scarlett, that much is obvious, but he also knows that I'm right.
"But you're one of them. Why would I trust you with her?"
"Because you have no other choice. You knew all of this, yet you didn't seem to be in a rush to send her back to where she's safe."
"You think she's safe in Maddison?"
"Safer than she is here in this shithole."
"But the Harris brothers—"
"Are not a fucking threat to her. I am not a threat to her," I interrupt. "But Victor Harris, he's a fucking threat."
William nods his head, conceding to me.
"He's right, sweetheart. You should leave."
"What?" Letty screeches at her dad. "No. No, you can't be serious. I'm not leaving you like this. Have you even eaten since you got back?"
"I'm fine, Scarlett. I can look after myself perfectly fine."
Letty fumes, her lips pursed in frustration and her little fists curled in anger.
