Page 61 of The Deception You Weave
She huffs out her frustration.
"You promise me you haven’t hurt her."
"I promise. When she's awake, I'll get her to call you. But I need you to call the others off but—"
"Let me guess, don't tell the Dunns that she's with you?"
"I mean, feel free if you want to deal with the wrath. But I'd maybe keep it to yourself somehow."
"Fine," she sighs, sounding exhausted and exasperated. "Fine. I'll do your dirty work this time. But only this once."
"I appreciate it. Look, I know things are…"
"Fucked-up."
"I was going to say complicated, but that works. But I'd never hurt a hair on her head, I need you to believe that."
"What's happened, Kane? You're scaring me."
"It's not my story to tell, but she's fine and I'll have her call you."
"Fine. Okay. I'll just have to trust you, I guess."
"I know it'll be a challenge," I deadpan. "But I appreciate it."
"Can I go back to sleep now?"
"Once you've delivered the news, yes."
"Good. Bye."
She hangs up before I've even parted my lips.
Okay then.
I knew she'd be pissed, but shit.
Placing her cell on the side, I lift the letter from my lap once more and stare down at her writing.
Sucking in a breath, I flip it over and slide my finger under the flap, opening it.
My heart races as I pull out the paper inside. I have no idea what she's going to have written in here but the last thing I'm expecting is for a small square to fall from the folded letter.
I pick it up and gasp.
"Holy shit." My hand trembles as I stare at the fuzzy black and white image.
I stare down at the easily recognizable baby and my chest constricts at the sight.
Is this my baby?
Needing to know more, I place it gently on my thigh and open the letter.
Kane,
I was scared.
I was so fucking scared. There are no words I can write here that could truly express how I felt the day I stared at that positive test.
