Page 8 of The Deception You Weave
She hesitates and looks between the two of us.
"If you knew what she'd done, you wouldn't be saying that. I need her out of this room." I don't bother looking at her as I say those words. "She's a liar and I don't want her here."
Her gasp of shock rings out around the otherwise silent and sterile room.
Kyle wants to argue, I can see it on his face but he wisely keeps his mouth shut as he looks to Letty with something akin to an apology in his expression.
The sound of her feet moving drags my eyes away from my brother so I can watch her walk out of the room and away from me.
My heart slams in my chest, as it feels like it's cracking wide open all over again just like when she finally told me the truth.
She pauses at the door and I panic.
My hands tremble and my chest heaves, trying to drag in the air I need.
A little machine beside me starts beeping but I pay it little mind as her eyes finally lock with mine.
"It's not what you think. You need to let me explain."
I shake my head, the insistent beeping continuing. "I'm not interested in anything you have to say. Get the fuck away from me."
She's forced to move aside as a nurse comes running in.
"Mr. Legend, as good as it is to see you awake, you really need to calm down."
Narrowing my eyes in warning at Letty, she finally gets the idea and rushes from the room.
Falling back onto the bed, I close my eyes and suck in a few deep breaths while the nurse checks my vitals and chastises me for getting worked up.
"You were very, very lucky young man. But that doesn't mean you're in any state to get yourself worked up. You need to rest, your body has been through a lot."
I don't say anything, I don't even look at her as I assume she checks my vitals then promises to be back later.
"What happened?" I ask once I know it's only Kyle and me in the room.
He hangs his head, running his fingers through his hair and stares down at me.
"You were on the wrong side of the fucking road, Kane. What the fuck happened?"
I shake my head. "I wasn't paying attention."
"You fucking think. You nearly drove headfirst into a fucking truck."
"My car?"
"Jesus fucking Christ. Someone needs to come back and check your fucking head. You should be glad you’re fucking alive." His voice gets louder as his own fear begins to get the better of him. "If you'd have died then I—"
"I'm sorry," I whisper, guilt flooding through my veins at the look on his face. "I'm sorry, shit just got messed up and I wasn't thinking. I shouldn't have got in my car."
He raises a brow at me as if to say 'you fucking think.' But I had to get away from her.
Even as I think about those few minutes before I fled, my anger begins to take over.
"She hasn’t left this room since she first got here."
"I don't care," I shoot him down. "I don't want to think about her. Talk about her. She's nothing."
"Right. So it's safe to assume that she's the one who caused all of this?"
