Page 101 of The Deception You Weave
"Drinks?" Hallie asks, either not seeing where Kane's hand is or just ignoring his actions. I'm inclined to say it's the latter.
"S-soda, please." I try to push his hand off, or at least lower, but he's having none of it.
"Same," Kane adds.
"And your usual?"
"Yep, for both of us."
"Coming right up. You kids enjoy yourselves." She beams at Kane and my heart melts. It's nice that he's got some kind of family aside from the Harrises after losing his parents when he was younger and then his gran less than a year ago.
"I don't get a say in what I eat?" I ask as he watches Hallie retreat to the kitchen.
"Nope."
"What if I don't like it?"
"You will," he states full of confidence. He leans toward me, pushing my hair away from my ear with his nose. "I know exactly what you need, Princess."
My breathing falters at his words, his deep voice and the silent promise of what's to come sending a shiver down my spine.
His hand squeezes my thigh before he shifts a little higher.
"Kane," I warn, my eyes scanning the space around us for spectators.
"No one can see you and no one would dare walk up to this table unless they're bringing food or drinks."
"T-that's enough. Hallie seems too sweet for the likes of you."
He chuckles at my words. "Don't let her sweet smile fool you. That woman knows everything."
"Yeah, apparently so. How exactly did she know who I was?"
He thinks for a moment.
"Because I've talked to her about you," he admits, although he doesn't look at me when he does.
"Why? What have you said?"
He shrugs as a younger waitress walks over with our sodas and places them down in front of him. Her eyes don’t waver from him, and if it weren't for the fact she just delivered two glasses then I'd have no doubt that she's no clue that I was even sitting here.
Kane, however, doesn't even look at her, not even when he mutters a thank you.
"What have you told her about me, Kane?"
"It doesn't matter."
"It does to me." I don't know why I say it or even think that he might take pity on me.
He stills before slowly twisting in his seat so he can look at me.
"She knows everything," he confesses. His eyes holding mine so I can see the truth in them.
"E-everything?"
"Well, not the recent developments. Or the sex in the library. She'd probably get a kick out of that through. So—" He turns and lifts his arm. "Hal—"
"No," I squeal, reaching to grab his arm. "Don't you dare."
