Page 74 of The Deception You Weave
I take a deep breath, and just let the words flow.
"A little over eighteen months ago, I went to a party back home in Harrow Creek. I was assured he wasn't going to be there, but I should have known better.
"We ended up in the backyard and—"
"In the backyard?" she asks with a smirk.
"Yep, in a puddle to be precise, because it started lashing down with rain while we were out there."
She nods while amusement sparkles in her eyes.
"Anyway, he got me pregnant." She doesn't gasp or show any kind of shock, proving that I was right about how much she overheard of our argument. "But I miscarried at twenty weeks." Now comes the shock.
"Twenty fucking weeks. Oh my God, Let." She reaches for my hand as her own eyes fill with tears. I, however, feel remarkably stable.
"I never told him. I was too scared."
"He had no idea?" Her eyes go so wide I swear they're about to pop out.
"I didn't tell anyone. I didn't know how to. I knew that my mom would have been disappointed in me. I knew that Kane would hate me, that's if he even accepted I was telling the truth. I just… I freaked. And then it all came to an abrupt end, and I figured I could just move on, you know?"
She shakes her head. "No, not really. You don't just get over something like that alone, Letty."
A humorless laugh falls from my lips. "Don't I know it. I finally hit rock bottom at the end of May and I dragged my sorry ass home to confess to my mom. She helped so much and here I am."
"Shit, Letty. So last night?"
"Kane and I…" I trail off, how do I even begin to explain what Kane and I are. "Kane blames me for a lot of stuff that's happened to him. I'm pretty sure he's never really dealt with any of it and all those emotions have just festered within him and are unleashed as hate on me.
"As a kid, I dated his best friend, but he died. He blames me because the night I broke up with him, he got off his head drunk and drove his car into a tree."
"Jesus."
"The night of the party, his little brother got busted for drugs and went to juvie for a year. Kane was with me while it was all going down. Again, my fault. It's just one thing after another."
"No wonder you didn't want to tell him about the baby."
"I know, but I was wrong. I should have at least tried. That argument you overheard, it's when I first told him. He assumed the worst and—"
"He thought you aborted it."
"Yeah."
"Another thing to hate you for."
"Then he went and damn near killed himself. My fault and…"
"You're aware that this would make a good book, right?"
"A book? It's a fucking disaster." And I've not even mentioned the Hawks or Victor's involvement.
"There's always time for a happy ending." I stare at her in utter disbelief. "What? I'm a little bit of a romantic, sue me."
I can't help but laugh at the sappy look on her face.
"So? You hooked up with him for some hot and steamy hate sex last night?" she assumes.
"Uh… yeah, something like that."
