Page 69 of The Deception You Weave
"If she didn't do that, I'm not sure I'd be here right now."
"You mean at college, right?" I ask, the alternative doesn't even bear thinking about.
"I don't know," she whispers. "Things got bad, Kane. Really fucking bad."
I drop my head into my hands, not able to process all of this right now.
It's too much. Everything about Letty is too much, but this…
I never expected this.
I wanted to be mad at her that she had aborted my baby. I clung to that anger and didn't allow myself to consider any other possibility—that the reason our baby didn't exist wasn't that she'd chosen not to let it live.
"I should get back. Let everyone see for themselves that I'm okay."
"You don't have to go," I say. The words feel weird falling from my lips after all the times I pushed her away.
"I do, Kane. This," she says, gesturing between the two of us. "This isn't how we do things. I need to walk away and allow you to get your head around this and remember that you hate me."
A sad smile twitches at my lips. Unable to stop myself, I reach out and take a lock of her now almost dry and curly hair between my fingers.
"I don't—"
"Don't," she snaps, jumping from the bed as if I just burned her. "Can I borrow—" She looks down at her legs. "Something. I'll wash it later and have it back to you in the morning."
"Sure, but keep it as long as you need." I find the smallest pair of sweats I own and pass them over, regretfully watching as she pulls them on, covering up her legs.
"Thanks. I'll just call an Uber and be out of your way."
"Letty, shut the fuck up. I'm taking you back."
"You really don't—" She cuts herself off when she finally looks up at me and sees the determination on my face. "T-thank you."
"It'll give you a chance to tell me all about what happened to her, eh?"
She swallows almost nervously as if all the drama that's happened in the past few hours has made her forget all about her little car trick.
I quickly drag on some clothes while she gathers her things and together we head out of the room.
The guys are chatting in the living room when we hit the ground floor and the second she turns toward where the noise is coming from, I press my hand into the small of her back and encourage her to keep going but I soon realize that it's too late.
"Legend, you got some hot ass up there or something?" Footsteps approach faster than I can usher Letty from the house.
The second Devin appears in the doorway, his face contorts in anger.
"What the fuck?" he barks. "Coming back to try stitching us up again?"
"No, it's not—"
"Leave it, Dev, yeah?"
"Leave it?" he asks, his eyes wide. "She tried fucking snitching on us to Vic. I'm not gonna fucking leave it."
"Well, you need to," I growl.
"Or fucking what?" He closes the space between us, clearly even more pissed than I thought he'd be about finding Letty in his house once again.
"Guys, please don't. I'm leaving, okay? I haven’t done anything. I'm sorry for what happened. Your father gave me little choice."
