“I missed you today.”
“Missed you, too,” I confessed.
It was kind of pathetic just how much I’d missed him. Not that I wanted him to know that. I had no idea what to do with myself all day with no work, no toddler to entertain and chase after, and no Micah. Days off sucked.
Suddenly I was aware of just how alone we were as I looked down the hall to his bedroom. This could be it. We could seal our bond right here, right now.
But Micah pulled away. “Do you have everything?”
“Huh?”
“Let’s get home and rescue our girl. How many texts of reassurance did Silas try to send tonight?”
“Uh, what?”
“Are you okay?” he asked with a frown.
“I’m fine.” Embarrassed, I tried to shake off the lust throbbing through my body. Clearly Micah wasn’t thinking about claiming me tonight.
“Vada, Luce. We need to go rescue Vada.”
“Shit. Yeah, let’s go.”
Once in the car he turned to look at me.
“What were you thinking about back there instead?”
My cheeks burned and I turned my head to stare out the window refusing to answer his question.
“Nothing,” I muttered.
“Damn. It must have been good. Next week we’ll take Vada to Mom’s and she can spend the night, and then you’re going to tell me exactly what you were thinking for tonight.”
I clamped my jaw and tried not to grin as I thought of all the things I’d really like to do with him.
Since the second Vada was born my entire focus and obsession has been on her. Tonight, I realized that had shifted to include Micah. I wasn’t exactly sure when it had happened, but he was as much a part of my life now as she was.
That realization was a little terrifying. I counted on him. I trusted him. I’d never had anyone in my life that I could lean on like that before. Spending the day alone had really made me stop and realize that.
“Are you okay?” Micah asked.
I turned to look at him and grinned. “Never better.”
Reaching for his hand, I linked our fingers together as he drove us home, just content to be there with him.
It felt empowering knowing this man was by my side. It was as if he somehow made all the darkness of my past a little lighter to bear. And for once, I was excited about what the future held.
He pulled up in front of the little house I was renting and put the car in park, but neither of us moved right away.
“I hope it was okay that I made arrangements for moving this weekend.”
“What? Of course it’s okay. We don’t really have much, so it should go quickly. Most of the furniture and stuff here came with the house.”
He shrugged. “I’m going to pick up some paint and stuff and have them clean out a room for Vada and paint it and everything, too. We’ll need to babyproof.”
My heart warmed at his concern for my daughter, no, our daughter.
Having him to share the burdens of raising an exceptional little witch with me made my eyes sting with tears. One escaped and slid down my cheek.
