“Who do we have here?” Sally cooed.
“This is Vada, my daughter,” I told her, proudly claiming the child.
“Hi Vada.”
“Hi,” she said without hesitation.
When Sally reached for her, Vada happily went to her.
If I didn’t know her background, I’d never suspect the trauma my baby girl had suffered. Sure, there were moments that struck as painful reminders, but for the most part she was open and loving, easily receptive to others. She was amazing.
While Vada kept her distracted, I quickly worked to remove the splinter.
“Ow.” Sally jerked as I squeezed the infection from her.
“Boo-boo?” Vada asked. “I fix.”
Before I could stop her, Vada reached over and grabbed Sally’s finger then giggled.
“All better.”
When she pulled her tiny hand away, I saw she was right.
My jaw dropped.
“Did you see that?” Sally asked. “It doesn’t hurt at all. Thank you, Vada.”
While my patient marveled over her unexpected healing, I just stared at my daughter in shock.
Pulling it together long enough to get Sally out of there, I waited out in the main area for Lucy to finish.
“I’m glad I could help,” I heard her say as the teenage boy walked into the lobby and waved my way.
“Thanks Doc. Lucy did great, not even a scar,” he praised.
“So you healed him?” I asked after he left.
She shrugged. “I think word’s already out about me anyway. How’d the splinter go?”
“Um, it was interesting,” I admitted, still trying to wrap my head around it. “You didn’t mention to me that Vada is a healer as well.”
“What are you talking about? She’s two.”
“Almost free,” she reminded us.
“Sally’s finger was infected, Luce. I removed the splinter, but the infection was still there. I was about to give her a salve and send her home when Vada grabbed it and suddenly there was no infection left. She healed her.”
“Micah that’s crazy. Vada is just a child. Most witches don’t even show signs of powers this young, do they?”
“Honestly, I don’t know. Kelsey supposedly had her powers at a very young age, but is that because she’s an Alpha she-wolf or a witch?”
Lucy’s eyes widened. “Kelsey’s an Alpha?”
“Yeah. It’s pretty much common knowledge around here. I believe that’s why her bond sealed so quickly with Kyle and why she has to be super careful when doing big healings. Just like you can pull extra power from me, she will pull it from the entire Pack if she doesn’t watch it.”
“You had mentioned that a bit, but that’s kind of scary, Micah.”
“It’s a gift, Luce, just like you, and apparently just like Vada.”
