Page 72 of Healing Fate
I buried my face in my hands.
“She screamed ‘no’ at the top of her lungs and ran. Fortunately for me, she left her keys behind on the counter.”
I nodded, still embarrassed by my first reaction.
“You weren’t much better. You tried to leave the Pack.”
“What?” Mallick barked. “Is this true?”
Micah glared at me but shrugged good naturedly.
“I thought she was already mated and upset that I even felt the call. I mean, come on, she had a small child.”
“You assumed there had to be a father.”
“Basically.”
“Did you go to Kyle?”
“I did and he denied my request and then explained her situation. I wasn’t supposed to say or do anything, so of course I left there and drove straight to her house to confront her. I don’t think Kyle knows about that part so let’s keep it in the family.”
Family. It truly felt like I was a part of a family now.
“Well come, let’s get this sweet girl to school,” Lorraine said, picking up Vada and carrying her towards the front door.
“And I’ll swing by and help open the clinic with you,” Mallick told Micah.
Lorraine took control and carried Vada to the car and then strapped her in. I didn’t even know what to do with myself.
“Do you need a ride to the clinic?” I asked Micah.
He pulled me into his arms and kissed me right there in front of the house he grew up in for the whole world to see.
“We’ll walk. I’ll see you when you get back.”
He let me go and then leaned into the car and kissed Vada on the head. “You be good at school today.”
“Okay,” she promised.
My heart swelled as I watched them.
“That is the look of a woman in love with her mate,” Lorraine said as I watched father and son walk away.
“That obvious?”
“Nothing makes a mother’s heart happier than seeing her pup find his mate and fall in love. Someday, you’ll see.”
We got into the car, and I made the short drive over to the school.
“Now, if Micah isn’t your emergency contact, who is?” she asked.
“Um, Kelsey, I think. I didn’t really have anyone else to put down.”
“Well, you do now. We should get it sorted while we’re here. Micah should definitely be your next in line for emergencies, but if you’ll allow it, I’d like to be on there too. In fact, if you’ll approve it, I’d love to be on her approved pick-up list as well. That way if you ever need me, it’s all set.”
“Okay,” I agreed before I could chicken out and overthink it.
“Alright. And don’t worry about a thing. I’ll order a car seat today and pick up a few things to keep at the house. I do hope you’ll bring this sweet girl by often. How about dinner tonight since we never really got around to breakfast this morning.”
