“I think you know my sister, Susan?”

“Susan’s your sister?” I blurted out. The two looked nothing alike.

She laughed. “Yes, she is. She’s the best.”

“She really is,” I agreed.

“Do you guys need a minute to look over the menu or do you know what you want?”

“How about drinks? I’m just going to have water,” Micah said.

“Predictable,” Sapphire teased. “How about you, Lucy?”

“Water’s fine,” I said matching his order.

“She’ll have tea,” Micah corrected.

Sapphire looked at me as I rolled my eyes at him.

“Tea would be great.”

“You got it. And the little one?”

“Milk?”

Micah cringed.

“Bad for the tummy?” I asked.

“Yeah. It might be a little heavy on her. How about some apple juice and a water so we can dilute it for her. She got into a bit too much candy last night and so we’re easing back into food and all.”

“Well, she’s lucky to have full access to you, then,” she said as she laid a hand on his shoulder.

A growl erupted from me before I could stop it even though I knew she was just being friendly.

Micah bit back a grin.

“Still mating, then? Got it. Hands off. I’ll be right back with your drinks.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“You have nothing to apologize for. You’re a lucky woman.”

“I know,” I said, watching my mate find humor in my slip up.

“Thanks, Sapphire,” he said before turning his full attention back to me. “I didn’t overstep with the drink thing, did I?”

I shook my head. “Not at all. You’re right. I just wasn’t thinking.”

“You know, I fully respect that you are her mother and I’m just grateful to be a part of your lives…”

I shook my head, cutting him off right there.

“No. We agreed. All in. You’re right. You are going to be the only father she ever has. I can’t say it’ll always be easy because I’m not used to having someone else to share the burdens of parenthood with, and I can’t even promise we’ll always agree on things where she’s concerned, but I’m going to try.”

I reached across the table and took his hands in mine.

“Hungry, Doc.”
