“Okay, thank you.” I think I’m blushing. I have a fucking crush on Emmy.

My eyes scan over the plane’s interior, all white with a modern feel. It’s my second time on a private plane this year. Matt’s plane was cozy—still spectacular, but this plane is more sophisticated. It looks like it’s made especially for big wigs on business trips. I feel out of place in my usual leggings and a baggy black T-shirt. Queenie has already made herself comfortable on a bench seat. Her paws are crossed as she watches the door. I don’t know why, but she looks to be expecting another passenger.

I make myself comfortable with my laptop by a window seat. In what feels like an hour, but was probably at least four, we’re landing. I look out the window wondering how Queenie and I will make it to Grant.

Chapter 34

Grant

I’m waiting at the airport. Sure, Andrew could have flown with her and drove her to my place, but I wanted to be the one who picked her up. I want the two of us together the entire weekend without any witnesses to all the dirty things I want to say and do to her. She comes down the steps, unsure and looking back at the pilot, as if she’ll know where Lana should go.

It’s cute, but I also want her to have more faith in me. I wouldn’t leave her hanging somewhere she’s never been. Looks like we still have some trust issues to work out. I’m hoping this weekend with her will show her how committed I am. I’d ask her to move here forever, but I think I’d scare her. We haven’t been dating long, even though we’ve known each other since I was in high school. I personally feel like we could skip a few steps, but I understand her need to take things slow.

The moment she realizes I’m here waiting for her, her face lights up and the dimple I love appears. She rushes down and comes over to me.

I grab her and pick her up so her feet are dangling. “Hey, baby girl. You made it!” I give her a kiss. I would spin her around and make this super corny, but she’s holding Queenie’s leash in her hands. It wouldn’t work.

I place her back down on the ground and bend down to pet Queenie behind the ears—her favorite spot. Then I take Lana’s hand to lead her to the car. “You hungry?”

“Starving!”

“There’s a cool lunch place with the best bread. Wecan eat on the patio with Queenie. Sound good?”

She smiles. “Don’t you have work?”

“I’ll take you to eat and then I’ll have to go to the office for a bit. You can get settled at my place, though. I’ll bring something home to eat later.”

“You sure? We can just grab something to go right now if you need to get back.”

“Absolutely not. I know I’m leaving you for a little bit, but I don’t want you to be alone your first hour in Texas. You’ve never been, right?”

“No, not to Texas. Scarlett said it’s hotter than Hell. I think it’s nice.”

“You made it at the perfect time of year. We’ve got some cool things going on in Spring. You have a busy weekend ahead of you after I get done with work.”

“You consider yourself a Texan?”

I smirk. “Well, no, but I do love it here.”

“I can see why.” She says it quietly, but it’s everything I’ve ever wanted to hear. I hope this trip will make her see I want her here with me always.

Chapter 35

Lana

Grant tells the hostess we’ll need a table on the patio. She leads us to our table and the smell of jasmine filters in with the tiny breeze. There are pergolas out here filled with some sort of beautiful flower growing on vines. It creates shade and beauty. A fountain flows in the distance.

Grant asks for a plastic cup, which is a little odd to do right when we sit down. Is he scared he’s going to break his glass one or something?

Queenie lays by my feet as we open our menus. Everything looks amazing. The first page tells me it’s an award-winning restaurant.

The waiter comes over with a plastic cup and fills our water glasses. Grant asks him to fill the plastic cup as well. He immediately gives the cup to Queenie. He’s so thoughtful.

I smile. “Thank you.”

He looks over to me and smirks. “Figured she’d be thirsty.”

She had water on the plane, but the more access to water the better. The waiter takes our order and then we’re left alone in a beautiful setting, outside on a perfect day. Butterflies are freaking flying around. Where the hell am I? Inside a rainbow?
