This is ridiculous. I’m not going to follow orders from aguy.

My plan of being with him temporarily is looking silly. I can forget the amazing kiss. I’ll have a go with my toys and this pathetic crush I have on Grant will end. Besides, what’s in this relationship for him? I’m still a mess. I lost it last night. That’s not sexy. Grant must be out of his mind.

Better to not get involved with a crazy person.

Chapter 25

Grant

It’s been five days since I’ve seen Lana. Tonight, is the night. I’m at work, closing up a few things. I’m leaving for Washington, yet again.

I walk out of my office and say goodbye to my assistant. “Have a good evening, Claire.”

“Yes.” She smiles, tucking a strand of gray and brown hair behind her ear. “I hope you have fun this weekend. You got your flight confirmation to Washington?”

Claire has been my assistant since we startedReding and Green. She’s about fifty with a keen sense of organization. I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s been like a second mom in Texas, watching out for me, inviting me to dinners with her husband, and always remembering my birthday.

“Yes. On my way now. You can take off whenever you’re ready. Tell Bill I said hi and not to try too hard at golf tomorrow.” I smirk.

She laughs. “He can’t get the hang of it, even with all your pointers. Anyway,” she waves, “thank you! See you Monday.”

An entire work week trying to focus on numbers has been torture when I have a plan to see Lana. I can’t wait to see her face and kiss her again. That kiss was just the start to what I have in mind for her.

First things first, I need to catch my flight.

“Welcome to Washington, folks,” the pilot announces. “Enjoy the sixty-degree weather and hope for sunshine this week.”

I have my own, but thanks.

“Thanks for flying with us. We hope to see you again.”

I gather my things. I got the closest seat to the exit so I’d be on time to see Lana. After a dash through the airport I walk to the black town car where Andrew is waiting for me with my carry on in tow. “We need to go to Riverpointe Apartments, please.”

He responds with a silent nod as he closes my door and loads the luggage in the trunk. Andrew is my driver once I get into town. I shouldn’t be here as much as I am, but I keep making excuses I need to be in this office to see how the numbers are doing. I can do that in Texas. I come to Washington to have a chance of running into Lana. Luckily this time it’s the weekend and I’ll be here until Saturday. I wanted to stay longer, but I have an event I need to go to Sunday and a meeting Monday. One night will be fine, though. I’ll get to see her.

We pull up and park at her place. I’m ten minutes early to pick her up for our date, but I’m waiting so I don’t look too eager. I know she loves cooking, so I’ve arranged a private lesson at a friend’s restaurant.

My leg bounces up and down as I stroke my beard. I want to go get her right now. I check my watch every second.

Then sweats with hair in a messy bun catches my eye. It’s Lana and she’s not close to being ready. The final straw is she isn’t wearing the necklace I gave her.

I’m pissed. I pulled a favor for this date. Not to mention, I came back to Washington just so I could see her. Ishouldbe in Texas right now. I know she felt something in that kiss the other day. When I pulled away, she looked like she was missing air.

I’m wondering how to handle this. What I want to do is pick her up and throw her over my shoulder. Prettysure that’s kidnapping, so that’s not going to work.

Looks like my Sunshine is still fighting those clouds. I have to be strategic with her or she’s going to bolt. Waiting a week to have contact with her again didn’t seem to help my chances of getting closer to her.

Good thing a challenge doesn’t scare me.

Chapter 26

Lana

Queenie and I just got back from our walk when a loud knock at the door sounds. It’s almost six, so I’m assuming that’s my “date.” I answer the door and before I can say anything, Grant let’s himself inside.

“Hey, Grant.” I blush, ignoring his gaze as I close the door.
