“You can put your rented tits away. We’re not here for that shit. Also, is Dr. Adler aware that she hired someone desperate enough to fling herself at patients? Jesus. Have some fucking self-respect. You see a man walk in with his wife and you all but pull your fucking titties out in the lobby?”
The woman shrank back in her seat like a slug after a salt bath.
“Margot,” Lennox sighed at me.
“What? Fuck her.”
“I’m sorry about that. I have an emergency. Is Dr. Adler with any patients?”
“I’ll check, Mr. English.” The secretary mumbled before buzzing into the doctor’s office. Lennox herded me to a corner and stared down at me. I knew I was about to get chastised.
“Margot, you can’t curse people out whenever you want to.”
“She saw me standing there and she flirted with you like she doesn’t have any fucking home training. Lennox, I know I share a body with Sutton but you should know me by now. I don’t tolerate bullshit.”
“Sutton is very reserved and would never…”
“I’m not Sutton, Lennox!” My outburst gained me the unwanted attention of the few other people in the lobby. I didn’t care though.
“I know that. I was just letting you know why the secretary felt comfortable enough to act that way in front of you.” He gritted out. His voice was like a blanket of shame over me.
Fuck.
I was too on edge.
“I’m sorry I snapped at you.”
“It’s fine.”
“Lennox, Sutton, come on in.” I turned around when I heard the office door open. A woman walked out and stopped at the front desk. She had dark hair and green eyes that sat behind a pair of red-rimmed glasses.
“I’m sorry for the short notice, Dr. Adler. I wanted to introduce you to Margot.” The doctor paused and held her hand out for me. We shook and I moved into the office quickly.
“Margot, I apologize, I assumed you were Sutton at first. How are you?” Dr. Adler seemed kind but I was in a weird space after finding out I was an alter and seeing that fucking piano. I wasn’t the nicest person in the world.
“Not too good right now. I’m trying to understand everything.”
“That’s understandable. It’s a lot to soak in. I’m Dr. Michelle Adler and I’m here to help. I don’t know how much Lennox has told you about me but I specialize in trauma so I’m very well acquainted with DID. There’s no judgment here. Only understanding.
Do you mind if I ask you some basic questions?”
I looked to Lennox because he was the only familiar thing that I knew was real. I nibbled on my bottom lip and he gave me a slight nod. Only then was I able to look at the doctor and push forward with questions.
“I can step out if you want,” Lennox said.
“Fuck no. Stay right here. Please.” I motioned for him to sit beside me and he let out a short laugh before he did. When he rubbed my knee, I felt safe again.
“Okay, let’s begin,” Dr. Adler picked up her iPad, tapped a few buttons and began recording me before she sat the iPad on the coffee table again. I’d been here before I knew she would record me. I knew she was kind and nonjudgmental.
“What is your name?”
“Margot DuBois,” I said. I folded my hands in my lap and glanced at Lennox again.
“Okay, Margot, nice to meet you. How old are you and do you know at what age you had your first memory?”
I knew without a doubt when I had my first memory. That was the easiest question to answer. It was even easier than telling her what my name was.
The only problem was that it sliced me in half to have to conjure up that fucking memory. It made me shake and sweat.
