CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
MARGOT
I was so groggy and out of it when I woke up next to Lennox. I just laid there for a moment getting myself together. I studied the way Lennox breathed and my chest warmed at the sight of him.
He was light years away from the man I met in Honolulu. There wasn’t an ounce of stress on his face. His muscles were relaxed and he slept like a rock.
I snuggled up under his arm and tipped my head back so I could kiss his cheek. His beard tickled me a little and I smiled. Today was going to be hard as fuck. I could feel it in my bones.
I rolled over and found the white journal Sutton and I kept and flipped through every page. A sad smile swept across my face as I traveled through our journey in the form of back and forth journal entries. My stomach was in knots.
Sutton had become more than a best friend. She was my sister. Most girls dream about having a twin sister and I had mine with Sutton. I might have been an alter in her head but to me, it added to the charm.
I flipped to the last page in the journal and realized it was the only empty page left. The entire book had been filled with notes and moments where we’d overcome so much together. I used the last page to write something meaningful that came from the bottom of my heart.
Sutton,
I love you. I’m proud of you. Always.
Love,
Margot
I put the pen back and smiled at my handwriting.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Lennox groaned and pulled me over to him. He was so warm and smelled so good. I closed my eyes to commit it to memory.
“Hey. You must have slept good,” I chuckled, turning to face him.
“After the way we fucked last night? Yeah. I slept good, Sutton.” He kissed my forehead like he always did.
I sat up and looked at him for a moment. He looked back in silence. “Everything okay?” He quizzed, lifting an eyebrow. I wondered how long it would take him to realize who he was talking to.
“Yeah,” I said with a slow nod.
More silence.
“Lennox, you really can’t tell?” I frowned.
“Tell what, baby?” He got up and went to the bathroom and I followed him, standing in the doorway. I didn’t say anything I wanted him to notice on his own. Once he washed his hands and turned to stare into my eyes he narrowed his gaze.
“Margot?” He asked finally.
“Yeah.” I gave him a smile that nearly tore my heart out of my chest. I knew I was making the right choice. “You’ve never mixed us up before,” I pointed out.
“I know. Shit. I’m sorry. You haven’t been around in a while and…”
“It’s okay, Lennox. Sutton is changing.”
“She is. She’s so much like you but still so much like herself. I…” I put my finger over his full lips and curled my fingers around the back of his neck. He kissed me and I sank into the moment.
“I’m happy to see you,” I told him, rubbing the tip of my nose against his.
“I’m happy to see you too. Are you gonna be in control when we go to this meeting?” He asked. He grabbed his toothbrush and handed me mine. It sat in a stainless steel cup beside Sutton’s.
“Meeting?” We brushed our teeth at the same time.
“Yeah, Sutton and I are meeting with a woman whose daughter is a student of DuBois. I really hope this one goes somewhere because the last seven have gone nowhere.”
