CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
MARGOT
“Hey, you okay?” Lennox’s fingers were knotted tight with mine as he squeezed my hand. Everything was hazy but his eyes were like beacons of light hailing me in.
“Lennox, what the fuck? Where are we?” I recognized the room but I had no idea how I got there. It was starting to freak me out.
I sat up too fast and my head swam. Soft colors danced in front of my eyes. I held on tighter to Lennox’s hand because I was afraid of what it meant to let go.
“Hey, Margot?”
Why was he asking like he didn’t know who the hell I was?
“Where are we?” I asked again.
“Home,” he said quietly. “I’m gonna call out from work for the rest of the day. Give me a second.” I watched him pull out his phone and speak in hushed tones before he was right back at my side, pressing his palm against mine and linking our fingers together.
“How’s your head?” He asked.
“How’d you know my head was hurting?” I swung my feet around and placed them on the floor. It was warm and made my skin tingle. I stood slowly, hoping I didn’t get too lightheaded.
“Just a hunch. I’m glad to see you, beautiful.” He leaned over and kissed my forehead. I couldn’t help but smile. Everything he did made me smile.
“I’m glad to see you too but I don’t understand how we got here. This is your place right?”
“Yeah, this is home.” He put his arm around my waist and I sank into him, resting my body against his.
“Did you pick me up from somewhere or did I call you? Was I drunk?”
“Margot, let’s talk. Sit down.” I wanted to move around though. I felt the intense need to stretch my legs.
“I don’t want to sit down. I want to know why I’m at your house and why you keep calling it home.”
“Because this is your home too. That’s why I want you to sit down for a minute.” The only way he got me down was by sitting me on his lap. I’d live there if I could.
“Fuck, I’ve missed you, Lennox.” I rubbed the tip of my nose against his and shut my eyes. In that brief moment, I saw slices of memory.
I saw Lennox and I sitting at a table eating sushi. I saw us sitting in an office on a couch. I saw him staring at me like I was a fucking goddess and I wanted to bottle each memory and keep it for when things went dark.
“I’ve missed you too. Margot, I have to tell you something.”
“It’s about Sutton, isn’t it?” I don’t know why those words rolled out of my mouth but somehow I knew he wanted to talk to me about her. He confirmed my thoughts with a nod.
“Can I show you a picture of her?”
“O…kay,” I sighed. He showed me a picture on his phone and I stood to my feet immediately. He wasn’t showing me a picture of Sutton.
He was showing me a picture ofmyself.
“What the fuck is this, Lennox? I don’t remember taking this picture.” My throat tightened and it was hard to swallow.
“That’s Sutton. That’s…you. Margot, I thought when we were in Hawaii that you were Sutton roleplaying. I had no idea until later that you were separate from her.”
“What are you saying, Lennox?” I couldn’t stop staring at the picture on his phone. My hair was swept up in a bun and I was smiling. Even my eyes and expression looked different. It was all so…demure. There wasn’t a fucking demure thing about me though so it didn’t make sense.
“I’m saying that you’ve been dissociating, Margot. Sutton is who you are mainly but sometimes you split. Sutton and I have been going to therapy for a couple of weeks now trying to work through it all. You haven’t shown up in two weeks.
While Sutton and I were having lunch she drank some sake a little too fast and got a headache. I knew that meant you were surfacing.”
